Actually, on a side note - Geocities.ws is where Geocities was sold to and is still an active webhost. I use them for my future vintage PC resource site, and to host the downloads for my NeoCities site as they allow hotlinking. It's basically unlimited space for free on a free account with FTP access so might not be a bad site for people wanting to make a retro site. It's also reachable with a vintage PC web browser the last time I checked.

It had such a huge cultural impact to teenagers and hobbyists at the time.
People who had no own PC, but visited an internet café or a library could create their own personal site within a few minutes.
I suppose that really lowered the initial hurdle to many.
All it needed was a browser, some creativity and some content. Pictures, sounds, ZIP files.. 😁

Shoot, I was surprised to find out my old band Lithium's page survived the changeover there. - http://www.geocities.ws/lithiumempyre - me, our rhythm guitarist Hawk and his ex-fiancee made that page on O.G. Geocities in 2001. It seems very ad driven though (got an ad for TikTok on my phone accessing that so probably better off hit with Firefox with adblock and noscript).

The original premise moved to NeoCities - which is where my main site is. Only thing is they don't have FTP, and their version of "SiteBuilder" would be their on-page HTML editor - so you have to learn HTML. That said, W3schools seems to be good for that these days. I'm at the point I don't need a WYSIWYG anymore to make pages. Even write some pages on my vintage PC's using DOS edit.

There is still a lot of old stuff hidden out there in WWWLand waiting to be found. A newer page referred me back to the Uncreative Labs Total Hardware 99 page in splendered green text to my surprise yesterday.

Quick update. Found a vintage software development kit (SDK) for MCS-51 micro controllers.
It needs Windows 3.1, 8 MB RAM, VGA and a 486 processor. Freeware, it seems.

Discovering WinDoom in 2022, that's something!
There's a later version from June 1995, it seems I was the only one having a copy of it.

My angelfire web pages made it all the way to 2020 for some reason, sad they are gone.

Found another version of the BBC emulator (it's v0.4rs).
This version needs WinG, Win32s and a colour depth above 256c.
Otherwise, the output stayed black.
Anyhow, I don't know if it's really worth mentioning.
I'm not even sure it was ported by same person..

Edit: Correction. It's v0.4rs, not v1.4.
The 1 was part of a tilde that Windows has created for 8.3 names/paths.

Edit: Added another picture and the archive with source code, too.
There's a sample binary of the emulator itself, but no roms included.

Found an old version of Nofrendo, a NES emulator.
It can be downloaded from Wayback Machine.
The sources do have a Win32 folder, among other platform folders, but I haven't seen DirectX beeing mentioned so far.
Maybe there's a chance porting it to Win32s?

I know, right? Browsing those old sites is a bit like time travel! :D
On the other hand, it also causes confusion sometimes.
A few years ago, such simple HTML pages were still being created by beginners.
It's really hard to understand how on earth we ended up with this world wide web of today.

Quick update. Found the vintage COSMAC ELF Simulator for Windows 3.1! ^^
It's "Compatible with Windows 3.1, 95, and NT, as well as WABI (Sun), WINE (X-windows), SoftWindows (Mac), and other Windows emulators."
Now, isn't that something ? And yes, it really works! It also can run and save programs entered manually. It's an unknown little gem, I think.

The COSMAC ELF was an very early homebrew/development kit thingy from the 1970s.
It was based around the "COSMAC" CDP1802 CPU (early: CDP1801 2-chip CPU) and the Pixie video chip.
It's a platform the CHIP-8 interpreter would later find its home in.
The CDP1802 itself later became known as a dependable processor for satellites and space probes.

Quick update. I went through a few dozen of early Win95/32 emulators from Japan that I found, but none of them really worked.
Here's one of the few applications that ran on Windows 3.1+Win32s. Hope it works.

It's not an emulator sadly, but a CPU usage monitor. With an unique trait.:
An anime/manga style processor meter! ^^ - It can also display numbers and bar graphs.

Sure, it's not on-topic, strictly speaking - unless we consider it an utility for software developers (emulators are them, too).
