Yeah, I goofed when typing that up, had too many stepping combinations in my head. Its an S7 not a U7.

From what I read about this topic it's more about the production date and not the stepping. 98/16 is definitly worth trying. Simply set the multiplier on the board to anything below the CPU's default and run some benchmarks and compare the result with those at default speed.

Finally documenting my haul from Vintage Computer Festival Midwest this year...
In terms of PC parts I got a variety of useful bits while not paying too much.

Motherboards:
Asus P6T (LGA 1366) + i7 930 + 12GB DDR3-1600 - a replacement X58 board so I can rebuild my 2010 PC after the P6X58D-E died.
Asus P6T-SE (LGA 1366) - thrown in free with the normal P6T... seems to be pretty much the same but without a floppy controller.
QDI Excellent I (Slot 1) - untested

A nice custom PC, actually bought it just for the case but was pleasantly surprised regarding the internals:
Asus A7M266-D (Dual Socket A)
2x Athlon MP 2400+ (Thoroughbred-B)
3GB RAM
GeForce 3 64MB AGP
Adaptec PCI-X Ultra160 SCSI
Asus PCIUSB2
36GB 10kRPM SCSI drive
80GB IDE drive
Enermax branded case, clone of Chieftec Dragon

A netbook:
Asus EeePC 1001P

CPU stuff:
A bunch of Socket A/370 coolers (copper!)
Athlon XP 2500+ Barton

Graphics cards:
Cirrus Logic GD5464 2MB PCI - writing this out is the first time I realized this wasn't a GD5446. It's a Laguna3D! Yikes!
GeForce 2 MX400 AGP (MSI MS-8837)
GeForce 3 64MB AGP (missing a RAM heatsink)
RIVA TNT AGP (Viper V550)
RIVA TNT PCI (Viper V550)
S3 Virge DX PCI

Audio:
ESS ES1868F ISA (labeled "Mako Premium")

A whole bunch of NICs:
3Com Fast EtherLink 10/100 ISA
3Com Fast Etherlink XL PCI (x3)
Netgear FA311 PCI
Unknown PCI NIC, Intel chipset?
Hayes branded ISA 56K Modem (this counts, right?)

Misc:
IBM Model M keyboards (x2) - excellent condition, barely used
Packard Bell 14" CRT with speakers
A few untested IDE optical drives
Random external SCSI cables
CD-ROM caddies (x2)
A pair of Altec Lansing computer speakers
StarTech PCI serial card
Belkin USB 2.0 PCI card (NEC chipset)

And the big one, outside of the PC space... where all my money went 😜
A NextStation Turbo Color! Fully specced out with 128MB of RAM and all the peripherals to get it going, including the sound box. Finally knocked that off my wishlist after a decade plus!

Nothing too special in here, and depend on the price too, the dual 462 mobo is nice, too bad is ASUS it may die for no reason (the usual BS with that garbage brand). But if u want reliable x58 board get anything that is not shitty ASUS, no wonder urs did die.. My Gigabyte x58 UD7 meanwhile is not dead, cuz is not shitty ASUS...

I LOVE grab bags! Especially when they are a good deal. And when you get that one card which is usually valued more than the entire lot... jackpot! ...And then everything else is gravy.

I consider the so called gravy to be the common crap, that is not welcome in my collection since is peasant stuff, i use to sell them to the common ppl, by that way the whole lot became for free. Is strategy i use since forever, made my whole collection free, since every penny i did spend i did get it back + more... So yeah gravy FTW ....

Like here, got all cards for dirt cheap 15 euros, and then sold the shitty Trident for 20 euros, and made the rest for free + 5 euros for me to buy something to celebrate. That Video 7 was broken sadly, too bad since it was made in Germany and the quality was great..

Or this got them for 25 euro (only for the black mobo since was brand new, rest was for free), sold the crap Tualatin ECS mobo for 35 euro and rest is for free...

Or these did pay 25 euro + MFM 8 bit controller and x2 AM2 mid range boards (so total cost was like 80 euros), sold the ABIT BP6 for 60 euro ( know not best decision, but did not care for that board, since was unstable, no tualatin support ect..), solt the AT PSUs for 40 euro both and the trident for 20 euro... So yeah gravy FTW AF .....

About those slot1 Intel Deschutes, just to clear things up - yes, it is not the stepping but date that governs multiplier locking, that is correct.
BUT what was referenced here (S7 vs U7) is part of the sSpec number and is not related to any steppings.
And SL2U7 is a totally different model, with higher base speed 450mhz, vs the SL2S7 at 400mhz.
And none of those 450mhz ones, nomatter the date code, have unlocked multiplier.

Bought this bundle cheap enough to be worth it. IC7 has a pin stuck in the socket, TUSL has broken tabs on Socket and few components knocked off, according to seller. Hope they're quick fixes 😁

Haven't seen them myself, arrived at a fellow collector in US.

How would you fix broken tabs on the socket?

The board I'm testing with is a ZP-6B1 ver 2.1. It supports 50mhz, 66mhz, 75mhz, 83mhz and 100mhz FSB with 3x to 5x FSB according to the silk screening.

What's the problem with asus? Disregarding lowend boards on mainstream sockets (which are with all manufacturers questionable) I don't see any reason to call asus x58 boards bad like that. Specially with x58 gigabyte boards can be very unstable.

Hoping that I can replace the socket partially (fingers crossed) as AFAIR, it is the top part of the socket, that has the tabs. If not, I may have to replace the socket completely. I have a couple of new ones and access to proper soldering equipment. Only thing I don't have, is patience 🤣

Bottom half has the heatsink tabs, just checked a board I had sitting here.

I've never had an Asus board on any socket that has been anything other than great. But then, I never buy low end boards.

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

Man, that's depressing. As these things age, and the plastic brittles, I suspect this will become more and more common. Are there any socket 370 boards that have an alternate retention mechanism (anything similar to the backplate designs in use today?)?

all FC-PGA S370s use the same socket and retention mechanism, even in servers.

there are probably some cases where you could safely drill two or four holes through the PCB to add a backplate or tie-down retention mechanism, but doing so would require you to know the board schematic to avoid cutting any traces in underlying layers in the process.

Tusl2 I bought from a friend who got 10 such boards from a guy who had computer parts business years ago. All of the boards had a pattern of 3 bad caps that needed to be replaced. P5A came from ebay.de. It's revision 1.04 ... so K6-3+ 400ATZ found new home 😁.

Radical has a hate boner for ASUS and carries on as if they are the only AIB that produced shit boards, truth is they all produced shit boards occasionally back in the day due to the capacitor plague which hit all board partners. Even now AIBs still produce shit boards but are smart enough to label them as budget boards and price them accordingly, thankfully we dont have a cap plague to deal with.

Actually its not just ASUS he has a hate boner for ...its pretty much any bit of retro gear he decides is peasant quality, how he comes up with his metrics is anyone's guess but I have yet to find any value in his posts.

Just ignore their hate boner posts nothing of use comes from them.

Maybe you can explain it some more: I thought the sSpec-number also changes with a new stepping. So there might be different sSpec with same stepping but not different steppings with identical sSpec.

So your P2-400 (4x) boots with a multiplier of 4.5x? That matches my experience above, but I can't reproduce it anymore.
