yeah, tried that. 10 seems to be the best result. It just might be a very noisy video card causing it.
My Alaris Cougar doesn't seem to have it nearly as bad, but it has a higher quality vesa video card with a better ramdac.

What video card is that ? Is the RAMDAC integrated or external ( socketed or not) ?

I'm also seeing a lot of noisy waves 🙁

I've tried two brand with the same AGxx chip and both have the waves, from my experience, the higher resolution you set, the smaller the waves becomes.

looks like to be something that only converts VGA to Hdmi. I don't see any scaler feature. 😢

I took apart my VC160A some time ago (no analog Audio-In version of VC180A), here's Vogons topic I put them into : LINK

All,

Does anyone have an issue with Extron RGB-HDMI 300A (I got used one, not brand new).

After I turn it on, the LED indicator turns amber instead of green, suggesting that it receives power but cannot see video input.

That is quite weird as the VGA from S3ViRGE (or Voodoo 2) works just fine with the old monitor. I suspect that Extron is faulty, but it would be better to ask you guys as it seems that you are quite experienced (maybe I missed something?).

Many thanks!

This has triggered the vaguest of memories from when I was playing with mine. I remember there was one machine it just wouldn't play with (which had an onboard VGA output). Do you have another VGA signal you can try it with?

Sadly no, I do not have another VGA to try out... for now I just got my first old build based on P55C (circa 1998). I was thinking to buy brand new Startech VGA2HDMIPRO (https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-VGA-HDMI- … =dp_ob_title_ce), however this one supports 640X480 so DOS/BIOS may not work, as text mode is 720x400 strictly. For now will stick to old 17" monitor... will look for another scaler...

I'm going to share my experience with scalers:

The reason I had issues with 320x200 and 720x400 on cards I used is, the sync timings are 100% identical between those two modes. (At least, according to the VGA spec.) Exact timings were obtained using Datapath cards and RGBEasy API, and this held true for 3dfx, Nvidia and S3 cards at least.

Honestly I have never used a single scaler that knew the difference between the two. Either resolution can look great at a time, but not both at once. And that is due to the nature of the analog video signal: it doesn't have a horizontal resolution. It has timings and a line count. In 320x200 mode, it just repeats each line to make 400.

How LCD monitors can get it somewhat close is beyond me- I'm not sure what magic they use, but you still get scaling artifacts to some degree. I can only guess these devices sample the line at quite a high rate and interpolate the samples. Or there's some kind of funky heuristic that doesn't have anything to do with the VGA spec. Mystery to me.

In the end, I decided just to make 320x200 look good and text mode will forever look like crap. It would otherwise require a manual preset selection each time. Vertical squiggly lines are not avoidable in my capture but only while in text mode.

I use an Extron DVS 605 and turn on rate-matching so that these modes still come through at vsync=70hz, but it can of course output something else up to 120hz if I really need it to. And it even handles my Commodore 64 with both NTSC and PAL chips, something the DVS 304 DVI did not do.

Also have the 300 mentioned earlier and it has worked well for me as a general purpose "I don't want to screw with settings, I just want a picture" scaler, although it too had the aforementioned tradeoff and necessary configuration just for 320x200.

For those that have a AIXXCO adapter working at 720x400@70, can you please open it up and check the IC inside? I think they've """upgraded""" it and it's now using a MacroSilicon MS9288C instead, which doesn't seem to be capable of handling it.

For MS-DOS and Win9x games, I've always preferred refresh rates between 100 and 144 hertz. I set these frequencies in MS-DOS - using the UniRefresh program, and in Windows - with standard tools (Registry settings and dxdiag). Also, I liked the Startech VGA2HDMIPRO product for its support for image reflection.

Tell me, which VGA-> HDMI solution is currently best suited for these two purposes together (What would support 100hz + frequencies and have the reflection function in the settings)?

Does the Extron DVS 605 support screen mirroring (Right to Left)?

Mine has an IC with a marking written 'AG02-EX' inside. I've found someone's blog online about that MacroSilicon not working with older modes, unfortunately. There's only specs I could find about it, not even a datasheet. Maybe the I2C EEPROM is missing some EDID data. Someone with an EEPROM reader or hooking it up to an arduino could dump it's contents and investigate.

Mine is also AG02-EX (it says 2103 under that, which I can only tell from having taken a photo of it and zoomed in 😀 )

The first cheap adapter I tried also had an MS9288C, and it also didn't work with 720x400@70Hz.

It would be sad if the only cheap working option out there is no longer available!

Can do 1280 x 1024 at 75Hz (rated speed).

I tried it under Windows XP, and it can do up to 1280x720 @ 85Hz (720p being max. vertical resolution for this mode, but 1024x768 @ 85Hz also works). 85Hz+ isn't possible.

I have built many GBScontrol units with various GBS-boards. It's amazing for Amigas for example but barely works with PC resolutions. MY 60 Hz BIOS page tends to work but not 70 Hz DOS, except sometimes it does... barely. I don't think the dev has a retro PC to test with so it's not a priority but maybe we can change that. He's responsive on Github. GBSControl would be the best solution in my opinion as there's zero lag and programmable individual screen settings like position and scaling for all the different resolutions we use so it will automatically center the image on screen if presets are saved. The downside with GBS is that it doesn't mix audio into the HDMI signal but that's rarely relevant for us PC guys.

The capacitor upgrades mentioned on the GBSControl Github wiki do a great job of cleaning up noise in the picture both on the analog and digital out versions of the boards: https://github.com/ramapcsx2/gbs-control/wiki … are-Mod-Library

GBSControl also doesn't know what to make of the RGB signal from my Amstrad CPC, but that's another story.

I have decided to dump Extron RGB-HDMI 300A completely. Now I have OSSC 1.7; it works great out of the box 😀 It is not necessarily the cheapest solution, but it works without any headaches.

Finally it is time to have some fun with my Pentium 233 MHX 😁
