Active Directory Client Extensions for Windows 98 (DSCLIENT.EXE) is necessary to add support or NTLM2, which allows the Windows 98 and ME operating systems to connect to NT network shares. I found a problem, however. On both Windows 98 and ME, there is a delay of several seconds after the network login prompt before the desktop continues to load. I was unable to find any setting to resolve this, but I found a workaround.

Uninstall the software. Yes, you heard me. I don't know what gets removed, exactly, but the system still retains the capability to log onto NT network shares. It also solves the login delay. So if you encounter this problem in the future, now you know how to solve it.

It's been over 20 years, but I made an account to say thank you. Removing Directory Client Extensions from Add and Remove Programs restored normal login time without breaking network shares. Thanks from the future. Best,
