can't believe some people still trash valuable parts like these 🤷

Everyone has no idea what it's worth - for some it was simply old, today useless keyboards. That doesn't make him an idiot.

I admit I shouldn't have used that term.

Well, work worked out for me once more. I managed to find some 72 pin ram, which is cool and all. I also managed to find an 8100 HPV card that can accelerate my 7100’s video at the cost of not that great AV capabilities going away.

That’s cool, but, you know, this Radius Thunder IV that was underneath it was far more interesting.

Sure, it’s not the hyper expensive 1600, but who am I to complain about a high end NuBus 90 card, especially when it has a Photoshop Accelerator

So a month ago I found a Compaq Athlon 64 dual core system outside by the "grofvuil" ("Bulky waste"), including a wide-screen monitor. Although I really don't have the room for it in my apartment, I couldn't help myself, and grabbed it.

The screen was in reasonable condition, and worked well, with a crisp image, even though it had only VGA input for video. It did have integrated speakers, so I ended up using it for my test/hobby system.

The case was absolutely disgusting, both inside and out. It felt grimy all over, and there appeared to have been some kind of fluid damage inside. I don't even want to know what caused it.

I decided to gut the case, taking out all the components (including the backplate and even the Windows Vista license sticker), and then I got rid of the case. The system was lacking a hard drive, but was otherwise complete.

I tested the components and everything appears to be working fine. I installed everything in a (clean) ATX case, and it's a complete and working system again. I'm just not sure what to do with it now. I don't really need it, and I'm not sure if anybody else would be interested in it. I've opened a dedicated thread about this. Curious to see if anybody would be interested in what appears to be a fairly unremarkable system from around 2008.

Found a TL866II-PLUS eeprom reader/programmer with 18 adapters today.
tested reading a 25f80, works.

also several other electronic boards
4x esp12e
2x esp32-cam
3x nodemcu base
esp32-wroom-32
4x aht10 (temperature and humidity sensor)
neje lasermodule tester v1.0 & neje module 20W
3.8v 250mAh li ion battery
5x rcwl-0516 (Microwave Proximity Sensor)
5x gy-bme/p 280 (pressure or humidity sensor)
apdc-16k (with remote)
15x lz12v4-9x1w (still packaged like it came from an aliexpress seller)

and a DB9 female to female adapter 😀

I can't help wonder what the reason was for someone to throw all this out, most of it is still in the sealed antistatic bag. 😐

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.

The nodeMCUs can be made into wifi serial modems for old systems pretty easily... there's probably ESP32 versions as well now, but no advantage to using them for that probably.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Another strange BCM brand device with a "Whizpro" BIOS has surfaced in the trash.

The previous one a socket 370 board that was older than this one) I nailed together that BCM, Whizpro and Gtech are all something to do with lottery machines or kiosks. That LCD screen touts an ELO touchscreen on an internal serial port and there is a barcode reader on the underside. In fact the BIOS reports there are no less than six serial ports present in the machine. It all hangs off a rather heavy duty mount of some sort. Has all the usual I/O fixings and peripheral interfaces and the riser card for PCI has solder pads for one ISA slot. There's also oddly a Mini-PCI slot on the motherboard. 😕

The BIOS like the other one is locked and a battery pull does not clear it. Likewise the manual for the motherboard does not appear to be available online so no idea where the CMOS clear jumper might be. 🙁

if you recall were you ever able to get into this motherboard?

Looks like the fan on a Volcano 9 but the bottom looks like a Volcano 7+ ... but there were hald a dozen variations, somewhere in that range probably.

Looking like it's a Volcano 12 with the fan from the X-Blower attached to the Heatsink instead.

Intercepted an Iris Video Phone (desktop phone) that was destined to be thrown out/recycled... It has been shown they run Doom, so while not PC hardware per se, it's got game. Thinking/hoping I will get it set up for 16bit console emulators, and make it into semi arcade cab, countertop style. This kind of nonsense... https://cassettepunk.com/large-projects/phonetendo/

Phase 1: Hack t3h Gibson, get telnet access, pivot root, install debian.
Phase 2: ???
Phase 3: Profit.

Edit: Nobody was mentioning the hardware specs, finally dug them out to find it might only be a 400Mhz single core ARM, though I have an updated version of the phone, that hopefully isn't extra locked down, but might have a faster core. Anyhoooo, that means 16bit emu might be a bit optimistic, at least under MAME2000 which on a 600Mhz ARM CPU in a Leapfrog handheld tended to have stalls and frame drops. 8 bit stuff was smooth and playable though. Possibly there are standalone machine specific emulators that are a lot faster on ARM.

I just rescued a 19" Iiyama Vision Master 450 from the trash this morning. It weighs somwhere between 25 and 30 kg and apart from slight yellowing looks good on the outside. I still have to test it tho, keep your fingers crossed!

That's an excellent find and I hope it works 😀 I used to have one and it was a superb monitor that I really wish I'd not let go, but it did weigh a ton - it made my desk sag and sucked to drag to LAN parties.

I think you're right, I seem to remember 11 or 12, I have the same heatsink. It's a beast, hopefully you can clean up that rust and use it. Funny, it looks like the previous owner applied TIM to the whole CPU package and not just the die, 🤣.

Trash picked this Asus P5E and huge Zalman cooler "Optimised for nVidia nForce" whatever that means 🤣.

Looks like it will be a nice motherboard for Core2Quad! Incredible amount of heatsinks on Voltage section...

I had that exact mobo with an "Alienware" bios. $15 ages ago with a dead top pcie slot. Got a Pentium 670 up to 4.3ghz with a similar HSF and it was a blast with a 512mb 8800gt.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

It's alive! On first boot too which is always a bonus. It came with SupremeFX II sound breakout card which I assume is just HD Audio on a PCI 1x card
