I have a suspicion that 486 board will be a kettle of fish to get running,

Without a manual it sure will!
Maybe the SP3G manual will give some insight. Gotta compare them.
But for the first test, I'll just leave everything at is.

Its odd to see a 486 board with SCSI onboard, I wonder if it'll work without the bios chip. Its certainly a very cool board, worth the time tinkering with it !

I always thought that the DX was more interesting. I always found floating point arithmetic to be useful, unless all you needed was business software.

My first gaming PC was a DX-33 and I had really insisted on getting the DX vs the SX at the time (this must be around 1993). In hindsight, my dad should have said no and bought the SX-33.. I don't recall playing a single game other than Ocean/DID's Inferno that actually leveraged the FPU, and even then that game was pretty crap. By the time such games were more common we had upgraded to a DX4-100. Ultimately we paid a premium for something we never used.

True, the first half of the 90s there was little reason for average PC users to need a DX. Whereas those who had been familiar with the 386SX deficit of external addressing and general lack of cache implementation, making it slower in integer than the 386DX may have thought the 486SX was more like the 386SX without an FPU, rather than just the 386DX without an FPU (Which was additional anyway on a 386es) Therefor Intel may have nobbled their 486SX sales by the expectations set by the 386SX, but it didn't do them any harm if people were buying the DX instead. Unless they ended up with far more FPU broke dies they couldn't sell at all than let on... which may line up with later market dumping.

Myself around this time, earlier 90s, I had been playing around with "cheap junk" XT class, as a young adult without much money of my own, the 486es of all stripes were still eyewatering prices, I just wanted something that ran DOS 6.x and Windows 3.1 okay, so first "modern" hardware buy was one of those 386SX40 baby boards, which everyone had said was "about as quick" as the lowest end 486SX which was still out of reach. By 1995, prices were dropping a lot and there were a lot of things that demanded performance above that, so this time it was Pentium class that was eyewateringly out of reach, so I got a BEK 486 board and a Cyrix 5x86.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Added another Voodoo2 to the collection. This one has 110MHz memory and was priced to buy. It works fine. Does anyone know which vendor produced this card?

I was on the lookout for some sort of GTX 1660 for a Haswell-R build. The listing was for a GTX 1660, the photos displayed a GTX 1660 Super, I was sent a GTX 1660 Ti. Nice!

As part of the NVIDIA Turing family, the 1660 is a great card no matter what. Even if you don't end up using it for gaming, it supports all but AV1 codecs in hardware encoding (only the latest 4090 supports AV1) for streaming and video compression. It has great overall utility.

Got this GUS PnP today. Intending this for a future retro-DAW/tracker/demoscene build, so probably won't be dealing with any of the janky games support issues.

Apart from a Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT that I already posted, October brought some more Retro-hardware. The first might not look too retro, since these are M2-SSDs:

..but things become clearer when I tell you that they are only 8GB in size and that I also bought these adapters from M2 to SATA and IDE44:

After there has been some talk in this thread about 3D-PCI-cards I stumbled across a FX5200 from XFX. My 'best' PCI-3D-card is a Riva 128 so I decided to buy it even if I don't really need it, yet.

Then I finally found the case I've been looking for since quite some time: a Chieftec Dragon CS601. I still think it looks better than nearly all modern cases. Or maybe I'm just too old 😀

Got this cool old Mitsubishi 286 laptop. I can't do much with it right now though because I don't know how to launch Setup to set the hard drive parameters and stuff.

Nice one 😀 Such laptops must have been stupidly expensive back then

But at least my box is in better shape 😜

Actually I bought this one because my other box is missing the CD and manual but is in better shape than this 😀
Quake is not really rare or crazy-expensive. I'm sure many users here have that box. But DOOM I'll probably never get (because I'm not willing to pay the current prices)

Hope you didn't pay too much, cuz the 5200 is a bit weak.
Also I hope you are aware, that the 5200 won't run on a 430HX or older boards. However, from what I know Socket 8 will happily accept them (among other cards like Geforce 6200 and Radeon 9250).
Otherwise: Always nice to have powerful PCI cards for newer boards without AGP slot.

Yeah not sure about the rareness. In our country it was "indexed" for quite some time if I'm right and so it shouldn't have been available very freely in stores. At least not for poeple under 18.

I still can remember me going to a local bookstore which had some computer games occasionally looong time ago. Was back in my school time.
One day they had this game there, Qu..ke, or how it was long time written here in D..land. Price was widely above the average cost for retail games back than and almost unaffordable for me, 99.95 DM.
I thought very hardly about buying it (while not really knowing what this game was all about) and went several times to the store. In the end I took it and gave all my long time saved pocket money to the woman behind the pay desk (who didn't care about the "Ab 18" logo on the box at all). I still have the receipt dating Dec. 2th 1996. OMG, that are almost 26 years now. 26...

Got APM9100(Si9S5597) and PCChips M520 (Intel 430VX) motherboards, some SDRAMs, AMD K6-233ANR and Intel 166MMX SL23X CPUs for 25$.
The first MB works fine with K6, the second has no VRM and is untested for now.

It doesn't need VRM, onboard VRC should work fine for the most popular configurations. In fact I had several boards like this (I believe one of them is right now on my for sale list) and none had VRM installed (in fact I don't think I ever seen one compatible with these connectors too).

It was only 10 E+shipping so I simply bought it to have it at hand when necessary. Honestly I didn't look much into the compatibility-topic. What's the reason it won't run on old boards?

Voltage issues, it requires a fairly robust voltage supply to the pci slots and many early boards simply can’t supply enough voltage to this card. Voodoo 3 suffers similar issues on some early boards including super 7 boards.

This card is best suited to late Pentium 3 and Pentium 4 boards that have strong voltage supply for the PCI bus.

Frequently it was a key combo with one of the F keys on older laptops. Usually you could access it at any time not just a window at boot.

Picked up a lot of 15" CRT monitors and some components / PCs from the capital, and managed to get them home tonigh.

RklflAll.jpg

obzt9jal.jpg

A couple of DELL Trinitron Ultrascan 800HS 15" CRTs. The casings look great but the CRTs are a bit tired - one more so then the other. Not overly dim, but not bright like my low hour 21" dell. \

The PC underneath one of the monitors is a Compaq Deskpro 2000. Came with it's original keyboard. Didn't check the specs, all I know is that it's socket 7 and it has 48MB of EDO Dram installed. It's missing the HDD and CD-ROM. Didn't plan on getting it - went for the monitors, but the person who sold me said monitors was using this PC to test them - so I made an offer and he accepted it. Wouldn't let me have the hard drive unfortunately.

w5EC59Hl.jpg

The PC on top is an HP Brio B600 (I think) - complete and working with windows 98 installed. It's a 650MHz slot 1 pentium III running on a HP intel 440ZX chipset board with no AGP (on board matrox g200) and 1 ISA slot, 192MB of SDRAM and a 10GB HDD. The one on the bottom is an empty case I got from a friend who's also into retro hardware. I really like these early mATX cases.

TIEKFzil.jpg

These two are a couple of generic "black box" PCs common in my country from 2006 to 2010 - LGA775, pentium dual core or core 2 duo. The cases are in excellent condition, not bad looking models if you ask me, and of decent quality. Got them from the same friend who gave me the biege mATX case.

5WMSYC2l.jpg

From the left - a trident blade 3d AGP card - given to me as defective, a SiS 315 card - boxed, belongs to a friend of mine, I'm just borrowing it for testing - will have to give it back when I'm done. In the middle is an Asus p5N-D, an nforce 750i LGA 775 mainboard witch I've been curious about for a while. I have a zotac nf780i, but I've never played with a 750i before. The little blue board is an Asrock K7S41GX - sis chipset, matx. Wanted one of these for a while to test SiS socket A chipsets.
