Came across this thing by chance. According to the label on the bottom, it's a PCG-9B3M. But according to msinfo32, it's a PCG-FX501(GB). It has a sticker on it that says Windows XP, but I have no idea if that's original, and what it originally came with. I can't find any specifications or drivers for the thing.

So I put a fresh version of Windows XP Professional SP3 on it, but unable to locate any drivers, most notably sound. According to msinfo32 it has a VIA AC'97, but installing a driver for that chip did nothing.

Has anyone ever had a laptop like this before who can point me in the right direction?

"PCG" is a "technical model", which is useful for... pretty much nothing (outside the asian market, IIRC), you may get better success with the marketing model (which, at least on my FZ21M, is marked on the screen frame)...

but if you're looking for regular drivers (as opposed to things like shortcut button mappers and battery management), it's usually best to search by device ID (Linux: lspci -nn, XP or newer: devmgmt.msc → properties → details → hardware id, 2000 or newer: download "PCI-Z") 😀

---
...But, for AC97 (and HD Audio), searching for drivers is especially bad since the ID is primarily about the controller (usually Intel or VIA, in the southbridge) while what matters the most is the codec (usually a dedicated chip), which you may be able to identify from the "subsystem id" (that's how the correct .inf will ultimately associate with the hardware) but it's not always easy as with my Packard Bell iGo/NEC Versa E400 where I had to adapt a different driver for 2000!

drp.su is a good website for XP and newer (just ignore their "recommended" program unless you want to change 10+ options to disable the crapware it pushes)!

I was able to get my old Vaio PCG , Win-XP laptop working using the Yamaha chipset driver from the “Audician 32 ISA sound card”
Vaio likes to use the Yamaha sound chip.

Yes according to www.vaio-link.com archive 9B3M does not exist, the FX501 does and the audio driver points to Yamaha based...
"PCG-C1MV Yamaha AC-XG Audio Device Driver Windows XP 6.13.10" and "Audio Driver Windows XP 6.13.10.3146"... which points to 99 Sony models
and the file here for Windows XP: https://rebyte.me/en/sony/6251/file-10301/
Might not work but worth trying....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

Good find PC Hoarder ! If it is the VIA audio it is in the full driver zip.
If some other original file name can be found it could be here: http://dose.0wnz.at/ftp.vaiolink.com/PUB/VAIO/

Interesting, had no idea.

It's the same unit...PCG-FX501 / PCG-9B3M (model number / product name) according to the manual https://www.manualslib.com/manual/248564/Sony … 01.html?page=1#

Also, try this link for drivers https://www.helpdrivers.com/notebooks/Sony/PCG-FX/PCG-FX501/

Thanks for the link. I think this is all I need.
