@ndavis82
there seems to be only one version of win3x driver for the CS4237 - the one mirrored in the Orpheus site
original link: https://web.archive.org/web/20000831055516/ht … odrv/win_3x.cfm
so there is not much to try except the resource conflict investigation
could also worth the effort to do a clean 3x installation and see if something changes , win3x are not exactly the best with hardware/driver changes...

I already tried a clean installation of Windows, but it did not fix it. I suppose I can try changing the IRQ from 5 to 7 on the card and do another clean installation of Windows 3.1 with IRQ 7 drivers and see if that does anything. Thanks.

Hello

I wonder if it is possible to drag spdif signal internally from Orpheus. I’m building a PC with Orpheus and Soundblaster Audigy ZS Platinum pro. SB Audigy has 2 pin SPDIF input socket and if it’s possible, I guess Orpheus spdif digital signal can be fed to SB Audigy and sound from Orpheus can be heard from SB Audigy external HUB.

Doesn't the Audigy's external unit have a RCA SPDIF input on the back?

You can use a coaxial SPDIF cable to connect the Orpheus there. I've used this approach to get the SPDIF out of my Aureal Vortex2 card to my Audigy without any issues.

Great. Let me try that. Thanks.

I'm hearing a noticable audio lag in Quake 2 under Windows 98se, and only in quake 2. All other games seen fine - in DOS and Windows.

I changed the audio settings in quake 2 to low quality and no change. Playing with the sample rate/hardware acceleration sliders in dxdiag doesn't change it either. It's not choppy or laggy audio, just slow to output. Can anyone else test?

FIC-VA503+
K6-2+ 550MHz
128MB SDRAM
Voodoo 3 3000 AGP

Other than this I don't have anything to complain about. It all sounds great.

maybe you need to test another version of the 9x driver? perhaps the one that is faster on 486 systems?
under windows there is not much we can do , we are at the mercy of whatever drivers Crystal released...

I'm curious,
How did you eventually decide on the CS4237 chip?
If it was for compatibility Wouldn't something like the Avance Logic ALS120 be just as compatible and also offer SB16 support?

Were there some other reasons to go with the CS4237?

MB: ASRock B550 Steel Legend
CPU: Ryzen 9 5950X
RAM: Corsair 64GB Kit (4x16GB) DDR4 Veng LPX C18 4000MHz
SSDs: 2x Crucial MX500 1TB SATA + 1x Samsung 980 (non-pro) 1TB NVMe SSD
OSs: Win 11 Pro (NVMe) + WinXP Pro SP3 (SATA)
GPU: RTX2070 (11) GT730 (XP)

Pretty simple: the CS4237 is capable of great quality output and it's feature set that is used on Orpheus is not available on other chips.
Nothing that Avance Logic produced comes close, they produced chips for the budget market - which is fine and good but not suitable for us.

What's the difference between the CS4236 and CS4237? I have a motherboard with CS4236 onboard and it is excellent

from the top of my head main things would be SRS, S/PDIF and depending on the CS4236 revision the cs9236 serial port

Hello, there is no need for -5v.

So, does this mean that Orpheus 1 works flawlessly even if I use a brand new power supply with my retro build?

Yes! Can confirm mine works just fine powered by a Corsair CX450M.

it is IRQs setting for the 4237 control, it is not needed but the option is there because it *is* an option
it's the same as OPL IRQ , it's there but not needed

Will the Orpheus work in an 8 bit slot?

I haven't personally tested it, but this should work fine. The reality is that there is no part of the card that uses 16-bit transfers; the extra "connector" (16-bit ISA) is there only to provide access to DMA 0 and additional IRQ lines (above 7). Using the card in an 8-bit slot shouldn't cause any problems, except that you will be restricted to IRQ 7 or lower and will only be able to use DMA 1 or 3.
