I wanted to build a P4 system with a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP.
The mainboard is a ECS P4VMM2 rev. 8.1 with a P4 2.8GHz, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD and a 16GB CF card.
I installed the latest reference drivers from Phil but that didn’t work so I installed the drivers from the cd rom that came with the card.
WC Prophecy freezes the PC, Forsaken crashes, Hitman Codename 47 runs but weird graphics.
Unreal works fine (max possible 1024 x 768 though) and Unreal Tournament is the only game that runs like it should, at 1280 x 1024.
So I installed a 6600GT, formatted the HDD and did a clean Win98SE install.
First I installed the chipset drivers, then the nvidia drivers. All works well but then, after another reboot Win98 doesn’t recognize the 6600 and installs a standard VGA adapter instead.
After a few mire reboots -installed a soundcard- the 6600 suddenly showed up again, only to get replaced by the standard vga at next reboot.
While the V5 thing might be a drivers problem, I have no idea what’s going on with the 6600.
I‘m going to do another fresh Win98 install with the V5, but I doubt it will work. I used the same drivers in a P3-500 440BX system, even installed them over Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 drivers but never had any problems.
Any thoughts?
