So i pretty much finished building a pc from that time period, the hardware:

  • Intel Core 2 Duo SL9S8 E6600
  • Mobo P5KPL-AM EPU
  • x1900XTX
  • DDR2 PC2-6400

Initially i was using an older motherboard with a P4 HT but it was bottle necking the GPU pretty hard and a core CPU is more period correct, my only puzzlement is the motherboard, it's not really 2006\7 but more bordering on 2008\9, it shouldn't be a problem i guess but what do you think? good mobo for the period?

IMHO the CPU is a bit too old for this MB. You don't need this build for Win9x so pick a 45nm CPU.

In fact your Win7 build (for the record, P5G41C-M LX uses DDR3 instead of DDR2) can run WinXP with blazing speed.

Oh i know, i'm just creating one of the many extra PCs with the stuff i have laying around, i also changed my Win7 pc a bit, now it has GTX 570 SC and a different mobo from 2009 so that PC is more of a 2009\12 one, so now i was thinking to build a dual core system from 2006\8 to house the x1900xtx, i guess the cpu is old (it's intended) but should i buy an older mobo just for it? all in all the mobo is not that different from a 2007 one.

No, P35 is fine. It's not much different from P965 on stock settings.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Yeah my problem is just chronological, since all the pieces are pretty much perfect for 2006\7 it kinda pisses me off that the mobo is newer even though it behaves just like a mobo from 2007, even more so since i don't plan to overclock anything, this PC is just meant to be a historical late WinXP machine during the core era and SM 3.0.

It'd be nice to see an ASUS PhysX P1 in there. it's a mid 2006 accelerator, so perfectly period correct and an interesting quirk that never really took off.

yes i think it all sounds fine, it's going to be equal to anything from the period. I suppose one challenge of any pc from this era would be 'does it run crysis'

So i guess using a newer mobo isn't really an issue and it's mostly a subjective thing, for the crysis part...
Well, it will run at like 15fps at 800x600.

It might happen, i know myself too well to discard that possibility.
