Does anyone have Windows 98SE/ME drivers for the Intel Wireless 2100 and PCTEL 2304WT Modem? I bought a Dell Latitude D500 to give to a friend who wants a Windows 98 laptop. I was able to find the drivers for the rest of its hardware from this thread and the Intel Graphics Driver archive on VOGONS Vintage Driver Library (GPU is an Intel 855GM). Having the drivers for the Wifi card and modem aren't important, but would be nice to have for completion in case the person wants to use either function.

I've gotten Windows 98SE installed on the Dell Latitude D500 and have run into a bit of a roadblock. I've gotten every driver to install fine except for Audio. Once I got the Audio driver installed, I hear static when I should be hearing the Windows 98 startup sound. I once got it to work for a little bit, then it would do buzzing sounds. I've installed the Microsoft Security Update February 2004 CD. I can't install Windows 98 Unofficial Service Pack 3.66 because whenever I try to, the INF installer stops responding. Someone mentioned having to install a Service Pack but unfortunately he didn't mention which one. This is odd because I didn't have this problem when I installed Windows 98SE on my D600 and both laptops have the same sound controller.

Help, please?

Unfortunately, no. You're just going to have to purchase a semi-mini PCI wireless card that supports WPA2 and use odyssey client. There really is no workaround to getting Intel Wireless 2100 working because Dell never released Windows 9x drivers.

This is the right modem?

You should provide the hardware IDs to make searching for these drivers easier!

The only potential suggestion is perhaps installing DirectX 9 if you haven't already. Otherwise, I might advise trying Windows ME. Whenever I installed Windows 98SE on my D600, Windows was constantly sluggish, crash-happy, and even slow to boot for no reason. I had far more success with Windows ME, plus Windows ME is easier to setup with pre-installed USB support.

The compatible AC adapter models for this generation of Dell laptops are PA-6 and PA-9. Should be able to find either one for sale online. Other than that, I don't have the pinout on hand right now.

Its quite funny, because I'm also installing Windows 9x (now ME based on this post to make my life easier). I just wanted to give a thank you for the information, I'll also be posting how the process goes in the future!

It's likely due to Windows ME's improved WDM driver support. Windows 98SE just doesn't implement it as well.

Windows ME doesn't have any compatibility issues I'm aware of. Just re-enable dos mode, add the updated soundlbaster16 driver, and cuteusb mouse driver onto the dos menu file, then everything should be good. 😉

I'd pick Windows ME over 2000 any day- you can use all sorts of 90's software and hardware opposed to 2000. 😀
If you're in need of more modern software, simply dual-boot with Windows XP. 😉

Hi, i bought years ago a Dell D600 for a Windows 98 setup reading this topic and finally i was able to get Ms-Dos sound with sbemu, so those who own this laptop can get a pretty good Ms-Dos/Windows 98 system.

This is a great thread, I also have a D600. I've noticed that the Ethernet driver causes Win98 to hang on reboot and shutdown. I actually have the Ethernet connected and it works great otherwise. But I've had to remove the driver to resolve the hanging. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue? It works fine in WinMe, so it's def 98 related. I'm also using a PD01x dock with an FM801 soundcard installed in the PCI slot. Surprisingly this setup works great and you get native Sound Blaster Pro support in Windows and real dos. I've noticed that if you install ACPI in Win98 that it will break the dock soundcard and printer port. So I don't use ACPI and have installed Rain to keep the CPU cool. Everything works in WinMe though if that's your preference, including sound in real dos if you use the Me dos patch. Obviously you will need a slowdown program like CpuSpd to get some older games working.

I installed Win98 on a D600 many years ago. At first it worked great. But it wasn't long until I started getting random issues with the OS. Blue screens, shutdown issues, error messages etc. Maybe I did something wrong. Or maybe it's just asking for trouble putting Win9X on a platform that's so far out of it's comfort zone?

Or maybe it's just asking for trouble putting Win9X on anything

It's this one. Only put the bare OS, necessary fixes, necessary working drivers and bare minimum programs. Then make a backup image. Reload periodically.

The only drivers I have installed are the chipset, directx9, radeon, and audio drivers. You don't have to do the resource hack either if you just pull the CD-ROM drive. And since I'm using Daemon Tools anyway for cd-rom images, there's really no need for the physical CD-ROM drive after installing the OS. I have a multi-boot setup with 98se and XP, so I can use XP if I need USB. I think the issues that develop with 98 are probably driver related, so less is more.
