Hi there folks,

I have just repaired a nice baby AT Motherboard, to finally take out the strength from my AMD K6/3+ processor. I will finally let to use the 100mhz FSB and the 6x hidden multiplier.

So I assembled all the system and all works, but when I install the VIA chipset drivers, I encounter a problem. The system become so slow.

It came out that the UDMA mode is slowing all here, like the VIA chipset simply can't handle it.

I tried Via Hyperion 4.35, 4.41, 4.56.

I am using a Windows 98SE operative system to enjoy gaming with a nice Geforce 2 GTS 32MB.

How can I use UDMA driver so? If not, can I load at least the Multiword DMA?

Someone can help me about that? Thanks a lot.

I have a 40GB hard disk Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST340014A

what version of the 4in1 drivers are you installing?
the latest is not always the best when in comes to the via 4in1 driver - for my 591Ps I always install v4.35 and I never faced an issue

My guess is that he’s tried these versions of the 4-in-1, just a hunch mind you.

If I enable UDMA system slow down, like really irresponsive.

I just reinstalled the VIA driver, version 4.43 and when I installing them and check the box "enable DMA mode" after restart the system is completely slow, like four-five times longer during the Windows 98SE loading. There could be some conflict or problems with the VIA MVP3 chipset and this mode?

I see that the hard disk led is continously working and after one second of work it blink, this happens continuosly. always a blink in the same amount of time. Probably the driver can't use that DMA mode and slow down all the system.

Hi,

Try to not install VIA IDE driver at all. IIRC during the installation process customize and disable VIA IDE driver in the checkbox. You will be able to set UDMA in the Windows device manager (Disk Drives -> Disk Drive type 47 or something -> Settings - DMA checkbox) later.

Windows 98 didn't come with IDE drivers for VIA chipsets out of the box. 😖

I tried older VIA drives and the issue is permanent.

I read other users that normally install VIA driver in a MVP3 chipset board and work.

What the hell has my motheboard? How can I solve that issue?

Now I try to remove VIA drivers that I installed for now, there is a software to correctly remove them?

It is better at this point that I use Windows 2000?

But what about "Standard IDE driver" ? IMO it's enough for this case

P.S. A good Phil's explanation how to change dma mode in bios settings

I am installing Windows 2000 now in another hard disk, Wester Digital Caviar 40GB.

So I will try this different operative system and changing hard disk can exclude the problem that the other Seagate "could" have.

I will let you know immediately.

Doesn't work with every motherboard chipset and PIO mode will be forced on unsupported ones in Windows.

Anyway happy to say that I have installed Windows 2000 SP4 Professional in another hard disk, a WD Caviar 40GB, and all works flawlessly, after installing the Via Hyperion Driver 4in1 4.35.

No more slow down, hard disk running correctly.

It seems the problem was Win98SE with this kind of motherboard, or chipset, or perhaps the hard disk?

my 591P is also 3.1

But it worth to try. My Win95 on DFI MVP3 system (VT82C596 + 80-wire IDE cable + Samsung UDMA ATA66):

Ok, at least the VIA MVP3 chipset works with the generic IDE drivers supplied by Microsoft. So, it is indeed worth a try.

My apologies for doubting you.

The problem is I don't remember how I installed the drivers as it was years ago. So I'm not sure and maybe you are right. I will recheck

P.S. I've dig into VIA driver-install-software and found out there're two drivers: viavsd.inf and viaide.inf.
I can misinterpret my digging but it seems viavsd.inf relies on a microsoft standard driver mshdc.inf but viaide.inf relies on a VIA MPD driver.
So, Gmlb256, I apologize too. The VIA IDE driver seemed to be installed but it looks like in my system the microsoft standard driver works.
I was confused because VIA installed driver usually shows in Windows Device Manager "VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller" (not "Standard Dual PCI IDE Controller").
I don't know what utility can show which driver is working now. I've installed SiSoft Sandra 99 but it can't.

P.P.S. The via driver installer also copied vatapi.vxd , but I didn't find any links to it in registry or ini-files so I guess it just loads during Windows start from system\iosubsys automatically and also works

biessea, if I were you I would try to understand what type of VIA driver has been installed: MPD (miniport driver) or VSD driver and then try to exchange. It seems in my system is installed VSD (although Windows 95 says nothing about it and even pretends it a standard one 😀 ) and DMA works

I am just thinking about this.

Could be the hard disk.

So I installed Windows2000 in a Western Digital that now I have partitioned with a fat32 partition where I installed Windows98se.
Now I will install the Via driver 4.35 and I will let you know, just I solve the problem of the LAN PCI card that doesn't work correctly to run this system on net sharing files with my primary computer.
