Project #12: a 2009 Core 2 Quad

Description: to close the gap between Pentium 4 with Hypertreading and the Hexa-/Octacore machines after 2010 I built this Core 2 Quad machine.
The Cooler Master aluminium case with it's glossy black finish, is monolithic and with It's discreet LED lights, it is rather stylish - almost as good as the Lian Li cases around 2010 😀
It wasn't a easy decision what graphics to choose, but eventually I went for the Radeon HD 5850 because it is authentic 2009.

Board: Asus K5K Pro, Intel P35 chipset, Socket 775, DDR2
CPU: Intel Core2Quad Q9505, 4C/4T, 2.83GHz, 95W, Socket 775
CPU-Cooler: Arctic Freezer 13, 4-Pin PWM
RAM: 4GB (4x 1GB), 800Mhz, DDR 2, Corsair CMN2x1024-6400C4,
Video card: Radeon HD 5850, 1GB with Arctic custom cooler, PCIe
Sound: ALC883, onboard
SSD: 60 GB, Kingston, Sata
HDD: 500GB, WS Caviar Blue, WD5000AAKS, Sata
ODD: Super Multi DVD Rewriter, LG GH22SL30, Sata
Cardreader: Noname Multicard Reader , USB 2.0
Case: COOLER MASTER Wave Master TAC-T01-EK, ATX
Case fans: 3x 80mm, Noiseblocker BlackSilent Fan XC1, 3-Pin
PSU: 600W, Xilence XP600, ATX
OS: Windows XP Home 32-Bit
Favoured Games: TBD

Building my own PCs since 1991 - for my retro builds it's "no CF-disks, no Floppy emulators, no modern cases etc.", only the real and authentic stuff whenever possible.

Nice build, but I feel it could do with a sound upgrade, maybe a XFi or a Xonar...

Hi! im trying to paint my case, i read you about RAL 9002 (#1 computer) and RAL 1013, have you used RAL 1013 on any other computer of the thread? I'm curious what it would look like. Thanks!

If you plan to spraypaint your PC-case, you might have a look at this thread: Best off the shelf spray paint for beige computer cases

For #1 and #4 I have used RAL 9002 because Retrobright did not provide a satisfying result and this colour matches in 90% of all cases with the drive bezels (after retrobright).

... but in some cases I use RAL 1013 (more eggshell white) for Drive Bezels or case-hoods to match the rest of the PC-case.
Here a picture of cases that I have spaypainted in direct comparison:

Damn RAL 9002 looks so good! In my country i can find only 1003 and all the other colors from that thread but all of them are more yellow/beige than RAL 9002… i’ll keep looking 😢

Thanks!!!

Maybe eBay can help, there are many offers for spraypaint from almost every known colour palette and there are even some offers for custom made spray cans.

This my latest project for 2023.
I will put my Pentium PC in a new(old) case and build a "Phils - 136 in 1 Pentium MMX Project".
For more compatibility with DOS games I will swap from the Millenium II to a "S3 ViRGE/DX (86C375), Hercules Terminator 3D/DX, BIOS version: G5h (1997-Nov-06)"
and from the "Creative Sound Blaster Vibra 16XV" to a "Crystal CS4231A-KL with Opti 82C924 and LS212 OPL-chip".
As the original drive-rails are missing and I don't have any that fit, I will have to improvise with some wooden stips.

Finally I found some time to go on with the case-swap of my "#2: year 1997 build".

... but I will break with some my own resolutions and use a CF IDE-drive as HDD and a Gotek Floppy emulator.
As I will have to reduce my collection over the next two years (were gonna move), I intend to build a more easily managable retro PC for the occasional retro gaming session (DOS & Win 9.x) 😉

This is what it looks in the current state ...
