Hi guys, I'm looking for some help. I'm trying to get tomb raider running with hardware acceleration. I'm using a compaq deskpro EN. It's a small form factor with a pentium III 1ghz, 512mb ram, and has a built in Riva tnt2/tnt2 pro. I think the built in graphics card may be my problem.

I bought and installed a voodoo 1, it's a diamond card. Usually, when there is a graphics card installed in the PCI slots, it bypasses the tnt2. But the Voodoo 1 require the on-board video alongside it to work. I used a y-splitter vga cable to take the video from the tnt2 card to pass through the Voodoo. I installed the 3dfx patch from the Tomb Raider CD in the installation directory and its named tomb.exe. but when I play the game, it appears to be running in its unaccelerated mode, in 480p. I conclude this because the shadows have hard lines in the gradients. And when I push F2/F3, it's resizes the screen. I thought F2 was supposed to turn on and off the anti aliasing? Of the videos I've seen of the Voodoo/tomb raider combo, the shadows should be smooth?

My conclusion is the tnt2 is causing this. So I'm wondering if maybe installing an older 2d card such as a Matrox, to bypass the tnt2 card, in combination with Voodoo might resolve this issue? Or am I missing something about getting the game to run accelerated?

too fast

So are you saying the pentium III is having a compatibility issue with voodoo 1? And just won't work as a result? How slow of a pentium would you need to have good voodoo 1 compatibility? I know the game recommends the 60-90 range.

afair ~500MHz is where you start getting into trouble

Ok, thanks for the replies. I was hoping for a more simple solution. I thought I had my bases covered between the pentium III and my 486 for my retro needs. But "unfortunately" I made need to do more retro pc shopping 😉

FSB? Idk, what I do know is my sff pc doesn't have great bios options. I know a lot of classic builds offer options for slowing the cpu down in the bios. Is this what you are referring too?

maybe its not speed related after all, after patching TR you should have tomb3dfx.exe file

That doesn't seem right. So as an experiment, I downloaded the patch from philscomputerlab, which was named tomb3dfx.exe but it's just the patch from the cd. Same file size. You're supposed to rename the patch tomb.exe and replace the default exe. I even ran the tomb3dfx.exe from the install directory without renaming it and it didn't change?

Ok, I did a little more experimenting, and I can get the game to run accelerated on my voodoo3, with the proper patch. But the gamma is too dark, it has weird visual artifacts on Laura's guns, and Laura has no shadow. But this does confirm for me that it is not running accelerated with my voodoo 1.

Those issues are expected from the Rush patch which the Voodoo 3 needs. You might be able to bypass the flickering pistols by pressing F3 to disable AA. But the rest is non-fixable on a Voodoo 3.

But this does confirm for me that it is not running accelerated with my voodoo 1.

As others have said, your system is likely too fast for a Voodoo 1. Search the forum for more details, this has been discussed before.

if V3 needs Rush patch then that patch wont run on V1, BowToYourSensei is it possible you used wrong patch?

No, I was using the correct patch for the Voodoo 1. I was just looking into other options, and wanted to see how the game looked on the Voodoo 3. I knew it wasn't going to be correct. But I wanted to also confirm it was not running accelerated on the Voodoo 1.

Ok, I ended up buying another PC. Got the Voodoo installed and the game runs accelerated now! It's a pentium II 200mhz. Has the anti aliasing pistol bug always been a thing? Or is there a way to get rid of it? At any rate, It has better gamma now, and Lara has a shadow. So thanks for the help guys!

If you're talking about the "greyish outline" around various polygon seams, if you turn off mipmapping, they go away.

Ok, I'll have to check that out. My "new" pc cd rom just died. But I was referring specifically to the weapons/pistols. They looked better on the Voodoo 1 but the muzzle flash had similar outlines to that. Turning off the the anti aliasing gets rid of it. Again, it's far less noticeable on the voodoo 1.

I think the pistol distortion also goes away if you activate the frame rate counter by pressing F2. That way, you can keep AA turned on.
