First things first, you need to get the video portion working. Since it's a VESA/SVGA-only game, you probably have a video compatibility issue.

Presuming you have a full VDMSound install (the main program, "Update 1", and the GUI Launchpad), edit the SCREAM.BAT file that the installer places in the game directory. Erase all text in that file, then use the GUI version of VDMSound on it (right-click, "Run with VDMS" with little musical note).

This will create a .VLP file for SCREAM.BAT. Whenever you want to tweak the VDMSound settings, this where you should do it, using the .VLP shortcut.

Now edit SCREAM.BAT to contain this:

S.EXE vesa

Close and save.

Does video work now. Hopefully so. If not You might have to use NOLFB or a similar tool (this depends on your video card).

For audio, Choose "SoundBlaster 16" for sound effects, and either "General Midi" or "SoundBlaster Pro (Old)" for music.

If you choose "General Midi", you should change the properties of your .VLP file. Click advanced, click on the MIDI tab, then change the MIDI output device from "MIDI Mapper" to "Microsoft GS Wavetable", then OK, OK. This gives you better MIDI.

Thanx, Nicht Sehr Gut,
The video portion, I followed all your instruction and this time the game start with black screen and a smal white screen in the center and nothing more.
1.Which file should I run the game(scream.bat or s.exe or scream.vlp) and with which VDMS(with or without little musical note)? Any how, I tried all the combination and got the same result, a white small screen on black background.
2. What is NOLFB? I have gforce 3 ti-200 vga card.
Please help!
Thanx!
P.S. I have VDMS 2.0.4 installed, is this the "update 1"?

this forum has a search function. please use it instead of asking ridiculous questions like "What is NOLFB" (since there are about 200 threads referencing it)

Yes, it’s my fault.

OK! Nicht Sehr Gut,
I got my VDMS update to update 1 and repeated your instruction again, but the problem is still there.
I also downloaded NOLFB from 3D realms, I'd tried run NOLFB.com first then VDMS but still no good.
What should I do now? Please help!
Thanx!

Snover,
As you can see I'm a newbie in this forum.
I thank you for your helping and patience.

Well I know that before the game starts, there are two introductory screens. Both are company logo's: "Cyberdreams" and "The Dreamer's Guild". I know the first logo was of a guy being struck by lightning in a white square, so that might be the first screen, try hitting the escape key and see if it takes you to the game itself.

1.Which file should I run the game(scream.bat or s.exe or scream.vlp) and with which VDMS...

Presuming you have already edited SCREAM.BAT the way I described, use the .VLP shortcut. That contains all the VDMSound settings. Also run setup with VDMSound (right-click, either one).
This might be one of those titles that won't run properly unless it has all it's sound settings made.

2. What is NOLFB?

showthread.php?threadid=467

Please note that NOLFB must be used in the same "environment" as the game. IOW, if you need to use it you should place it's name and location in the SCREAM.BAT file like this:

NOLFB.COM
S.EXE vesa

Please note, I'm not convinced that this is the problem as I remember something about this title doing "odd" things with VESA. Try it with and without.

Nicht Sehr Gut,
Guess what? The game run this time right after I use .VLP shortcut and I didn't do anything, wierd.
But I still have the voices problem, I can hear the game music playing but no voices.
1. In the game setting, I chose both(voices + text) in the voices option.
2. My .VLP setting : general MIDI w/ microsoft GS wavetable, IRQ 2 port 330. Soundblaster w/ microsoft wave, IRQ 7 port 220, 8 bit DMA: 1, 16 bit DMA 5.
Please tell me how to make the voices working.
Thanx!

Run the "Install" program within the game directory on your hard drive. Choose "Configure Sound & Music Drivers". What does it report as the "Current Sound Configuration"?

It should match the VDMSound defaults.

1. In the game setting, I chose both(voices + text) in the voices option.

Check your volume settings for music and sound effects. Make sure your music volume isn't "drowning out" the sound/voices. BTW, Is this the original game you have installed or a "CD-Rip" version?

hi Nicht Sehr Gut,
The current sound configuration is:
MIDI: general mini Roland MPU-401......100% compitable.
Digital audio: Creative sound blaster ....100% compitable.
My sound and music setting are both 50%. I can see the text but no voices.
My installed game is full Cd version.
Please help!
Thanx!

MIDI has a tendency to drown out digital audio depending on your system's settings for it. Adjust your sound settings from 50% to 90 or 100%.

If you still can't hear them you may be stuck. You can try using the game INSTALL to choose other soundblaster options (SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster Pro, SoundBlaster Compatible).

Hello. I am an unregistered lamer that doesn't pay attention to the rules. It is for this reason that I made an insanely dumb move by posting my email address here, bobbydanforth@hotmail.com, along with a request to have someone give me an illegal copy of this game. This was a very very, VERY stupid thing, and I know that if I ever do it again I will be banned from the forum. I sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this has caused, and rest assured I have been locked permenantly in the basement by my parents so I will never be able to access the computer to do stupid things like this again.

Oh, and bring back a 4-month-old post was not very smart, either.
