They definitely consider it to be theft. As I've mentioned before, their old facility was too small, and stuff would overflow out to the front where it was completely unsecured. I would stop by when they were closed and scrounge, but one evening I stopped by just a little too early and they were still open. No one was out front so I began looking through the pile of stuff, and a guy came out and told me "You can't take anything from here", so I left and came back a little later.
🤣 current average in USA for certain computer parts scrap value: HD's $0.50/Lb, MB $1.75/Lb, PSU $0.17/Lb, PC tower $0.18/Lb. (from https://iscrapapp.com/prices/)
So you take either 10 HD's or a few PC towers plus a motherboard at around 5 Lbs total and you stole maybe it worth about $5 and they would prosecute for theft 🤣
Yeah but you can shit on street and break windows under the Justice Warrior clauses and not be prosecuted at all... what a world we live in...
Long ago I knew a true story of someone taking about $4 worth of cans (@ 10 cents a can) and got prosecuted for it so maybe it is possible.
In most states its petty theft if the value is under $50, probably a small fine. In my state they can't even use force against you, 🤣 you could literally just refuse to ID yourself and walk away unless the cops can cook up other probable cause to stop you. I guess it depends on if they go by scrap value (arguably the more applicable measurement if your taking from a recycler) or eBay value. By eBay value if you steal a 486 it could be felony theft in some states where $500 is the bar for that.
(For legal reasons I must disclaim that it is illegal to steal, and that this is merely a statement of fact and not an encouragement to the commission of any crime state or federal. Please follow all locally applicable laws and regulations)
