With HP support for older Compaq products being somewhat unavailable, turns out making sense of the Compaq SoftPaq updates is quite the ordeal. There's a large amount of them archived on archive.org, with somewhat incomplete descriptions, so I decided to compile them into a Google Sheets file so anyone interested can just search their product and see what does what.

UPDATE: there's a newer, better structured file. It's still ongoing, but it's in the proper order and skips SoftPaqs I haven't found documentation for yet. Here's the link:

The file is very much in its early stages and not really useful at the moment, but I hope to get it to usable state soon.

Some interesting discoveries: going through the documentation has been an enlightening experience. E.g. if you were restoring a computer with Compaq CD-ROM adapter and NEC CDR-38 drive, the SP0477 allows you to do make it work.
Except having it all on a spreadsheet, while it will have to do for now, is a bit suboptimal, and there are gaps in the data that will need to be filled.
Note to self: maybe a wiki would need to be set up.
