I have been trying to get Stonekeep to run for a long time, and Ive tried all the things that I have found on these messageboards
but it still wont run. Ive gotten past the cache memory problem, but when I start the game up I get the Dos4gw in the upper left hand part of the screen and then it acts like its going to start but then it just sits there with a black screen.
Does anyone else have any suggestion to get this game working.

Just to be sure, you have already read this thread?
showthread.php?threadid=206

In any case, I went back and tried this myself and discovered a few things.

First, I have to point out that I was using v1.2 of Stonekeep from the "Interplay 15th Anniversary" collection. So if you are using an earlier version it may behave differently.

Normally, I try to install the game first, then defer configuring the game until I can run setup in the game's directory instead of the setup on the CD (this is because I like to tweak the MIDI settings at my leisure). That was a mistake. I found that attempting to run setup after installation without having saved an audio/video configuration caused the setup program to quit with a message complaining that it couldn't find a configuration file.

So don't skip the configuration after installing.

The other thing I discovered was that the "Test Movie Resolution" crashed the setup program every time, regardless of what video setting was chosen. The good news was that I could simply choose my video options and save them in the configuration. All of them worked, including the full-screen option.

Now, the bad news. For some reason, I couldn't get MIDI to work at all. Not General MIDI, not Roland. The setup doesn't seem to detect it and when I chose MIDI, the game would play, but without background music. I don't think I've ever seen that happen using VDMSound.

The OTHER_OS parameter is critical, and it will probably crash with:
OUT OF MEMORY allocating: cache memory (535237147 bytes)
...or similar error if you don't use it.

The rather convoluted method for starting the game (described in the previous thread) does work, but you can save yourself some grief by simply creating a new batch file and placing this inside of it:
H:\data\SK.EXE %1 OTHER_OS

Just replace the H: with your CD-ROM letter. You can ignore the DOS4G command as far as I can tell as this was only necessary for "virtual memory" which 2000 or XP are already providing.

I then proceed as normal. Might need some audio "tweaking".

Try the VGA video option in setup first. If that works, try the full-screen option. If you still can't get video, you may have a driver/NT issue.

I got this game up and running, thanks to you guys' help, but I do have a f ew problems:

1) I'm running a SB Live! card, and every so often, the sound skips whilst playing SK. Even without any other programs running.

2) Journal related crashes. (I lost all my progress wääh) It happened when I picked up the journal.

Other than degrading your audio settings to reduce the "load" on your PC, there's not a whole lot you can do. If you were to drop it down to a basic SoundBlaster (1.0x) in both the game's setup and your VLP shortcut, I bet it would be smoother. Of course, that would mean dropping down to 8-Bit Mono audio.

Haven't heard of this before...then again I haven't actually gotten around to playing it. Don't know what to tell except that there was a tip saying that certain places cause a crash when you save your game. The only recommendation was to go to a place where you had safely saved a previous game and save there.

Well, it didn't happen when I tried to save, but it happened right after I picked up the journal. I hadn't saved since the beginning of that floor too 😒

Ok, well then that just means you need to get in the habit of saving more frequently. Next time, save your position, before you actually pick it up.

Hopefully, it won't crash again. If it does, you may have a real problem.

I have the same crash (picking up the journal and thats it) with the German Version of the Game.
I remember playing it under Win95 with no Problems.....

Stonekeep should run in DOSBOX (reported in DOSBOX forum - I did not try it myself). Just one problem - for version 1.2 run it with the parameter "win95" (or whatever - as in Windows), otherwise it complains about not having enough FILES.

Aye, I have the CD version including the patch I can confirm this running in DOSBox.

Run the game through using "SK.BAT WIN95" and the patch will work properly.

Also, sound detection (for what's supported) and test movie function work properly under DOSBox.

There is only one problem (besides the FILES= with the 1.2 patch) I've been getting ever since using Stonekeep under DOSBox. After the Intro movie for the Interplay Slogan, all the sounds in the movies are off sync by I'd say 2 or 3 seconds, maybe more? i'm not that good of judge but it's definately noticable.
