it's amazing isn't it? and probably thrown out because its "old" by some measure and didn't work one time when switched on

a good rescue i'd say, the only time i ever see computers like this is at the recycling center, completely out of reach and sometimes damaged and exposed to the elements already 🙁

Do you still have the GTX 980? Let me know.

Cheers,

Yes, I still have it. I intend to test it in some other computer to see if it has any life in it. It's an Asus Strix.

Very nice. I guess there's no accounting for taste since that case looks quite nice to me.

I have no problem with the looks. I actually like this kind of simple clean looking cases without window, RGB and other nonsense. It's just clearly a budget case. HDD cage is not detachable to make room for graphics card, it's made of very thin metal, cable management possibilities are very limited etc...

Case is the Antec Three Hundred, No denying it was built to a budget but was great value and still has a bit of cult following (I suspect due to good airflow, clean looks and price)
They kept their value though. New they sold for about £50, on ebay now looks lie £40 is about the going rate.
Personally I have 2 builds a dual PPro system as it was one of only a few cases that the full size motherboard could fit!
and a dual Slot 1 rig loaded with SCSI drives

I don't know if this counts as retro yet, but I found this machine today. It was left next to the trash bins at my uncle's apartment building. It looked mildly interesting, so it took it.

Inside was:
Asus P9X79 motherboard, socket 2011, 8x ram slots
Core i7-3920
16GB ram
Geforce GTX 980 (which seems to be dead, probably the reason for throwing this away)
500GB Samsung SSD
250+2000GB WD hard drives
Blueray / DVD-RW drive

I took out the 980, and put in radeon 7750 for testing and it booted. 980 gave just blank screen and monitor went to sleep. The case is a bit shitty for long graphics cards, because the HDD mounting frame limits the lenght. I tried to fit GTX 1080 in there, but doesn't fit. Even the 980 was fitted with almost no tolerance.

It is in some cheap and nasty Antec case

Interior is fairly clean.

God damn some people throw out decent stuff. I could use this as my daily driver, if needed 😀

That's a good find 🙂
I wouldn't say that case is nasty. It looks very nice actually, sorta resembles the Coolermaster Centurion 5, nice, sleek and somewhat elegant (and not like some carnaval neon xmas attraction or something 😜 ). Nasty is if the case is full of mouse droppings (found at least 1 such case once), rusted, been dragged out of a watery ditch (yes I found a case like that, full of mud and plantlike materials), a case with dented, heavily rusted or missing parts. That Antec case looks rather clean, hopefully it's also complete (drive rails? (if it has any)).
I think I once also found a similar motherboard, but without SSD, no CPU, no RAM and some of the pins in the socket were bent, I never got around to test it.

Nice CPU HSF as well.

Nice find! 👍

Best score in a very long time; a GTX 1070 8 gigabyte! I saw the listing last night, and I was sure that someone else would have gotten dibs already, but he listed it as a "Free GTX 1070" in the Craigslist free section with no elaboration on what it actually was, so it's likely a lot of people had no idea. Anyway, I got lucky, so it only cost me a two hour round trip. It was even in the original box in an anti static bag! I've tested it in my mostly free system which has a Gigabyte 1150 motherboard, sixteen gigs of DDR3, and an i5-4590 CPU. So far it works perfectly. This is pretty close in performance to the video card in my primary system which is an RTX 2060 6 gigabyte card. At 1280x1024 the1070 system has a Time Spy score of just under 5,000.

Whoa, congrats, that's a pretty decent freebie.

With GPU prices still been crazy I'd still consider a GTX1070 a current generation card!

My thoughts exactly. I would still be rocking my GTX 970, but I need to upgrade to play Everspace 2. Nowadays I only ever upgrade when I find some new game that requires it.

I essentially just gave up playing games that are too demanding. I'm sticking with low-demanding or certain indie games. If my current system can't handle a certain game, I'm not even gonna bother with it, especially with todays prices for graphics cards.

I have been more than satisfied ever since my AMD FX-8370. I have done upgrades since then, but on a case-by-case basis. I upgraded to a Ryzen 1800X because I needed 64GB of memory, and loved the ECC support. I just recently upgraded to a Xeon E-2278G (Coffee Lake) to mitigate motherboard USB issues I had on my Ryzen system, and to fix the 16-bit instruction bug that affects all Ryzen processors on virtual machines. But in terms of web browsing, office work, light gaming, and general multitasking? My FX-8370 was perfectly fine.

I suspect that I might need to consider another upgrade for The Elder Scrolls 6. That was my original goal, but now I'll have to wait and see.

I was going to say, the hardware was pretty cool... but the fact that you got the boxes for EVERYTHING is absolutely insane!

Can you upload larger pics? Those thumbnails are too small to appreciate all the boxes. 😁

There's a 2MB limit for images.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Even the cases have original boxes!
PC's seem "Kinda new" eg slot 1 with a GF4 Ti, and the P3's with the FX 5200. Thats how we are building our retro rigs now more then back when this hardware was new.
Feels like someone got into this hobby, insisted in buying all boxed stuff, then decided it's not for them and offloaded everything for free?!

Whatever the case, I was reading the post and thinking yeh it's pretty damn good but that line about having the boxes, eta as well. That defiantly is what makes this special/rare...and I don't even care about that stuff myself!

Definitely please upload higher resolution pics! This is a great haul!

I very much doubt these were sold this way as is, P2 350 typically didn't come with 768MB of RAM and s370 Celerons (and especially a Celeron 633!) certainly didn't come with 1 1/2 gigs of RAM.

The mouses (or mice, whatever xD), especially if still new, will also be very nice, especially if these are also of decent makes.

It could also be a collection from someone who passed and their relative was happy to have someone pickup all the old computer "trash". This seems the most likely, I think.
