Finally got the Roland SC-55 😀

Had some trouble setting it: I initially connected the wrong MIDI output to the SC (the joystick/MIDI cable has two MIDI outputs) and had no sound coming in 😕.
I was worried it could be broken but then, trying the other MIDI output, it worked!

Only bad thing is that front panel buttons are dead, but I think I could repair them in the future.

I got two VIA C3 CPUs, a known working 800MHz part and a faulty 1.2GHz part. I paid $20 for the two and probably overpaid but damnit I have been coveting these things in working conditionf or years.

Judging by seller photos, the 1.2GHz has one or maybe two broken SMD caps near the heatspreader. Does anyone know the package and ratings of these? I am hoping it can be revived..

Asus V8200T2 GeForce3 Ti200 64M DDR Deluxe (bottom). It can overclock reliably to 224MHz/252MHz. So, it's more like a 'Ti400;' or maybe a 'Ti450' since VRAM matches the Ti500.
And then the genuine article; Asus V8200T5 GeForce3 Ti500 64MB DDR (top).

Nice, back in the day I got boned by the "All the Ti200s can run Ti500 speeds anyway" claim on various forums... and bought a Ti200... nope, got slowass RAM on mine, only did 200 grudgingly.

it would be interesting to see if 24 cores could make modern app run tho, im guessing those cores have HT. so 48? youll probably need at least 1000w power supply to run that and if you try any modern GPU in it more.

They switched to Socket 604 in the NetBurst era of Xeons (2002).
Then later in the 2000s after NetBurst got replaced, they "revived" S604 for Core 2 arch Xeons, that went up to six cores per CPU (three dual cores glued together, effectively).

This board is specifically from the S604 "revival" era.

The Dunnington series of xeons don't have hyperthreading, so it will be 24 cores.

Whether he needs such a big PSU depends which CPU he uses (E7450, 7458 = 90 W TDP, E7460 = 130 TDP) and the amount of HDDs and RAM sticks.
I rather expect the system to get noisy, because DDR2 FBDIMM tends to get rather hot and needs a lot of cooling.

BTW, its fun to use such an old server when heavily upgraded. I sporadically run an HP Proliant ML350 Gen 6 with 2 x Xeon X5675 (hexacores with hyperthreading) and 192 GB DDR3.
It happily renders in Blender with about the same output speed as an single i5-11400. In my case I just use 2 redundant 430 W PSUs and the system doesn't throw any warnings.

I have the non-Ti version of the same card (the vivo version)

I have a 1200W power supply and I'm planning to test a GTX1060 and an RTX3060 in it (because that's what I have here).
The CPU's will be four X7460's. No HT, so "only" 24 cores.

I'm currently still on the hunt for two additional coolers. I already have two - a "real" one and a socket 771 cooler that works after filing it down by 2mm. 😀
These coolers are a bit hard to mount, because they're supposed to screw into the case, but I don't have a case that will fit this massive beast.

So I also need to find backplates or screw mounting kits (already have two from Supermicro, but the quality of them is pretty bad).

When I have everything fully decked out, I'll open up a separate thread about this system.

Yes, that information is outdated. The X7460 CPUs are supported by the Intel 7300 "Clarksboro" chipset, which this board has.
Clarksboro is a requirement for using these CPUs and the only chipset they can run on, officially.

You can find this information on the archived Intel website and here on cpu-upgrade.
Intel removed the "Compatible products" section from their current website for some reason.

There is still a small possibility that the BIOS doesn't support them (Supermicro never released an update for it, there is only one version).
If that is the case, I will be very disappointed.

Finally gave in and got a Pentium Pro board bundle from ebay. It was quite expensive, although import, tax and shipping from US to UK didn't help!

It's the PR440FX, the cost was not too bad considering the pricing of the same parts in the UK. Got the motherboard, 2 x 200MHz 512k CPUs, 4 x 256MB EDO DIMMs (50ns) along with 2 x heatsinks (no fans).
It was listed as tested to bios boot screen only. I found and re-soldered a cracked solder joint on a capacitor (I think that's what it is). It turns on ok and gets into the bios without issues. Need a case before I do too much, it's a big board and I don't want it to flex and break anything else.

Wow, what are you doing for CPU cooling? Will it fit many ATX cases?

I got a YMF701 ISA sound card for nice and cheap (£9.99) the other day because according to the seller, it wasn't detected. Well it didn't even require fixing, it just works after running the Yamaha SETUPSA utility in DOS, looks like the YMF701 really isn't a PnP card and only Yamaha drivers can detect/initialise it.
Sounds great once it's initialised, nice little sound-blaster pro clone that will behave well on systems predating PnP 😀

There's so little info on this card on the live web it seems and what there is, isn't all correct. I'm pretty certain now from what I've seen and the missing PnP EEPROM that this YMF701 chip is not capable of PnP.
I think the PAL chip is for the IDE CD-ROM support but haven't tested that out yet.
The backplate is actually borrowed from another card since it didn't come with it, looks like all these labway (LWH) cards have the audio jacks in the same places though with the speaker/line-out at the top. I think that it was originally sold / rebranded by Addonics as the SoundVision 500, but this was probably an OEM one.

I have one of those Labway YMF701's too - the 701 chipset seems pretty rare, I can't recall seeing another once since finding mine, which was years ago.

It is indeed not PnP which is handy if used in a dual boot DOS / Win9X system and you want to use a second sound card in Windows. The 701 won't keep getting in the way.
