Hello,
I recently obtained a copy of Space Hulk. I tried to run this program in XP, but I have had no luck.
I have VDM launchpad; however as soon as I press the "any key" 🤣, I get an error message that states... Error with expanded ram-driver not present?
What does this mean?

Ooh. That's not good. That means that something (usually things like hardware RAID controllers) is taking up too much conventional memory and EMS drivers aren't loading.

Yes, it’s my fault.

I'm running a Dell dimension 2100 with 256 MB of ram and 1.2 processor. I only have a 40GB hard drive with one partition and no extravagant hardware devices. Is it looking for Himem?

Sorry I should be more specific. I get the error message in the DOS window after the game tries to load. The game will give me a text message stating the version and the title (dos text) and then ask for any key to be pressed, when I do this I get the error message in the dos window. It doesn't seem to be affecting windows in any way. I just haven't figured out all of the parameters yet.
I had another game that wouldn't work called Cataclysm, it was equally irritating.

thanks

Need to ask DosFreak about this, he posted this over at "NT Compatible":

Space Hulk
In the DRV_DIR rename sound.drv to sound.drk

He doesn't specify what that does...

If EMS won't work under XP, it's very likely that you have DOS mode USB compatibility for your mouse/keyboard turned on in your BIOS. For some reason, Microsoft made it so XP allocates memory for this compatibility which takes up some crucial areas needed by EMS. This results in EMS not being able to load properly. Try going into your BIOS and checking to see if USB mouse/keyboard support are turned on, and if so, turn them off.

The sheer irony is that my MSI mainboard has no problem with having DOS USB devices enabled (despite my using PS/2 for everything 😜).

Yes, it’s my fault.

Probably a good idea to test a title that needs EMS, but works on XP to confirm whether or not there really is an EMS problem and not one of those "false" memory errors.
