Quake 2 Remastered has just released and is free as a game update, if you already own the original through any of the digital reseller stores. It uses D3D-11 or Vulkan rendering (your choice) and has some nice lighting effects. You'll get the Q2 mission packs, Quake64, and a new sequel add-on titled "Call of The Machine".

It's funny how the marketing is pushing 120 FPS as some amazing new thing, while the original game could easily run at that frame rate 20+ years ago, if you had the appropriate hardware and a decent quality CRT monitor. 😁

And it seems it's not downgradeable in Steam.

You don't really need to downgrade it, because the original vanilla Quake II is still there. When you start it you get a launch options menu, and can pick between the remaster, the original game and expansions.
