I'm looking for 2.1 computer speakers for my study. It's quite a small room, and I'll mostly use the speakers to play music with my laptop instead of games. My budget is a little bit tight, so I think Klipsch ProMedia is out of question. 🙁

What I don't like from computer speakers is that they're mostly tuned towards games, where the bass (and most of the time, the treble too) is so overwhelming while the mid is so weak. Thus, I don't think such design is ideal for music listening. I love good midrange sound. However, I still want solid bass. By the way, that's also why I was disappointed by JBL Creature 2.1, because while its midrange is excellent, the bass is severely lacking.

After reading so many reviews and user comments on the net, it seems that Logitech X-230 perfectly fits my taste: the bass is strong, yet not too overwhelming. Also, according to the reviews, X-230 midrange is more than adequate for music listening (unlike many other speakers at its price range). But what I like most is that the sound quality is still great even at low volume. Well, at least according to the reviews.

However, Logitech Z-2300 is also still within my budget (although it is more than twice more expensive than the X-230). Alas, unlike the X-230, the reviews / user comments on Z-2300 mostly talk about bass, bass, and bass, which gives me the impression that the Z-2300 is more suitable for gaming or movie instead of music. Also, many user complain about the weak midrange.

I just wonder though: how accurate those reviews are? Anyone experienced with either X-230 or Z-2300 before? According to my criteria above (music instead of games), which speakers should I choose? Is the Z-2300 really worth it, or is it just more 'boomy'?

PS: I don't know if it's helps, but I mostly listen to ambient electronica / downtempo, world music, nu jazz, and acid jazz. Sometimes I listen to breakbeat and trance as well (that's why bass is still important). I don't listen to rock, though, so probably high volume performance is not that important?

PPS: Also, even when playing games on the laptop, I only play DOSBox games with Munt MT-32 emulator, so it seems clear midrange is more important than overwhelming bass, am I correct?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....
