I spend first year of my PC ownership using ~24" CRT TV with 15KHz TSR in autoexec. 386DX40 with some random Trident and passive RGB cable going into EURO SCART connector. New VGA monitors cost months salary at the time, and I was still in school. Played UFO, Doom, Cannon Fodder, Privateer, Colonization. Everything 13h worked absolutely great.

Just curious: how did the fact that you were playing the games at 50Hz (or 60Hz if the TV supported NTSC mode) affect the gameplay, especially in faster-paced games? I'm asking this, since the 13h (320x200) mode usually ran at 70Hz on actual VGA monitors.

I have a TV with RGB SCART input and support for both PAL and NTSC modes, and I intend to use it as a monitor for retro gaming, so this topic interests me in particular. Thanks! 🙂

https://www.os2museum.com/wp/fantasyland-on-vga/ The myth of the vertical retrace interrupt on EGA/VGA means games couldnt rely on reliable VGA vertical interrupts (even IBMs own PS/1 and PS/2 dont generate any), not to mention the risk of VGA clone outputting at different frequency. All in all you couldnt sync your game to refresh. That means games either yoloed like Vette/Wing Commander https://www.wcnews.com/chatzone/threads/what- … y-run-at.27666/ or used system timers for proper pacing.

TLDR: I dont recall a single game that would run at wrong speed with mode 13h at 50Hz.

Thanks for the explainer and the useful resources you linked to!

That means I can hook up my TV to a DOS PC with confidence. 🙂

I guess in the case of a TV with RGB SCART that supports both PAL and NTSC, 60Hz would still be preferable, since the experience would likely be smoother, right? I reckon that the lower number of scan lines in NTSC mode shouldn't be an issue with 320x200 anyway. And since an RGB signal is being provided either way, there wouldn't be a difference in color fidelity either.

Or am I wrong here?

^^Archipelagos might be one of the few games using EGA/VGA retrace, though.

Albion

An hidden gem. Uses 360x240 pels resolution (tweaked VGA) that puts mode 13h to shame.
Graphics are so good they look bearable on both TFT/LCD monitors and modern CRT VGA monitors, even! ^^

For comparison, I've tried to take some screenshots similar to what Mobygames has.
Unfortunately, the game is quite lengthy, so it's not much in this context. My apologies.
