Gravis UltraSound MAX Split Version ... Very rare find!

Monster 3D cut down version, saves a lot of space. Nice.

I'd get both for the brackets. The v1 has some useful chips. I'm in the need of that ramdac, one of v1's I have, got some crazy colors.

Seems like you have troubles not only with V1, but also with a keyboard ...

Both of course?
If you had to choose (for whatever reason) get the GUS.

Sometimes I get an error screen after sumbitting a post. But that's misleading because it was always succeassful. Often that happens when another post was submitted meanwhile. Just like right now 😀

I just bought an HP OmniBook 4150 off of eBay. It also came with a massive docking station and PCMCIA wireless card. The catch is that it was described as "untested" and was sold as is. I have never bought a computer "as is", but decided to throw $10 at it on impulse, as local pickup was available for an additional $5. I didn't expect to win, but figured that I could at least use it for parts if I did. I wasn't winning the auction, but the winner cancelled, so I got it. Not bad for $15.

Better yet, it works! It will need a new CMOS battery and probably something for storage (it sounds like there's a little gremlin with a baseball bat in there, which I assume is a failing HDD). Those aren't a big deal and I would have replaced the HDD with flash storage anyways.

The attachment HP_OmniBook_4150.jpg is no longer available

Regarding the specs, this one came with a PII 266MHZ and 192 Mb ram. The GPU is described in the manual as "256-bit NeoMagic MagicGraph graphics accelerator with 2.5-MB video RAM, 1x AGP graphics capability". I don't know which chips they used for sound, so I don't know what to expect for DOS SoundBlaster compatibility. I assume it'll be an AC'97, but I'm fine with that.

I'll probably just stash this docking station in a closet. It's massive and doesn't give me anything extra apart from an extra PS/2 port.

The attachment port_replicator.jpg is no longer available

I probably won't need the wireless card, but it wouldn't hurt to have it on hand.

The attachment DWL-650Plus.jpg is no longer available

Some HP laptops had the ESS Maestro-2E. My Pavilion N3350 AMD K6-2+/550M has that and an HPA display (in between DSTN and TFT). Same GPU.

According to the reference guide:

Major ICs Models without “4150” after serial number
CPU: Intel Mobile Pentium II or Pentium III processor.
South Bridge: PIIX4E.
Video: NeoMagic MagicGraph NM2200 (NMG5).
Audio: NeoMagic MagicGraph NM2200 (NMG5) and NeoMagic Audio NMA2.
CardBus: TI PCI 1220A.
Keyboard controller: National PC87570.
Super I/O: SMC 769.
Models with “4150 B” after serial number
CPU: Intel Mobile Pentium II processor.
South Bridge: PIIX4M.
Video: ATI Mobility-M or -M1.
Audio: ESS ES1978 Maestro-2E and ESS ES1921.
CardBus: TI PCI 1225.
Keyboard controller: National PC87570.
Super I/O: SMC 869.

If it shows 4150 B after the S/N, ESS Maestro-2E.

Without 4150 after the S/N, NeoMagic.

But, it depends on the scenario. I'd say slap Windows 2000 Professional on it and it'll say which sound card it is.

Thanks. It should have the Neomagic according to this.

Y'know, if I knew that crystal on that board was working, I'd be tempted to take it. Might be worth it for that one component alone.

You mean CS4231, right?
What's so special about that chip?

I would rather expect the GF1 being precious - there were some attempts at modern GUS recreation, but due to GF1 unavailability, the only option is Interwave, which isn't perfectly GF1-compatible.

No, I mean the actual crystal itself (between the GF1 and memory socket). The crystal used by the GF1 uses an uncommon frequency (19.7568 MHz). They are no longer made and finding stock of them is near impossible.

If the crystal starts to go bad, it can cause distortion and other issues on the GUS. So salvaging a working one from a broken GUS is definitely worth it.

The GF1 chip is definitely worth saving too. But it's also a less likely point-of-failure compared to the crystals, so IMHO, that crystal is probably worth more.

No pics because it needs surgery first, but got a LuckyTech P6VBX7. If the TRW wants hi-res photos of it as is, let me know and I'll take some as soon as I get home.

Surgery needed:

- DIN5 AT connector missing
- jumpers missing
- caps older than Black Beard

EDIT: It's alive!!!!

I have a Slot 1 440LX mobo as well (and Socket3 also has the same board as me, except it's marked EX), and it's the Zida-Tomato LX98-AT.

There was also very cheap and rock solid Zida ZX98. I modded a couple to Tualatin back in the day, 366@550 with good cpu no problem.
