Hello fellow vintage PC enthusiasts! I am pleased to announce the release of version 4.4 of my VE text editor for DOS. What is VE? VE (Visual Editor) is a full screen text editor for DOS. Think vi power, but smaller, faster and friendlier to use. You can download VE at www.inverary.net/ve.
Version 4.4 adds support for MDA and Hercules, extending the previously existing CGA, EGA and VGA support. VE has now been tested successfully on all models of PC from the PC XT all the way up to Pentium-class machines (while running DOS of course!). Since there was no differences in the computing cores of the original IBM PC and the PC XT, it is a fair guess that VE will run successfully on an original IBM PC as well.
Since v4.2 was released, I have expanded my test bed with two very early PCs . The first is the infamous Olivetti M24 , an 8086-enhanced XT clone and the second is a fully XT-compatible clone from a company called THE (Thompson, Harriman, Edwards). The M24 runs native CGA while the THE XT runs Hercules/MDA.
As always, I am very interested in feedback from anyone who tries VE 4.4 on any of its supported environments. You can post it right here on Vogons or email me at support@inverary.net. Thanks!
