Question about A2D

I skipped Diamond MX400 on the first place (mostly because Aureal Vortex 2 > Canyon3D 😀 ), but while lazily skimming through this old review, I read something about A2D --a software emulator for A3D 2.0.

A3D 2.0 also added "A2D", the software-only reduced version of A3D 2.0 that works on any old sound card, but at the cost of a big fat performance hit. You can use A2D with the MX400 and get results no worse than those from any other sound card, because all of the work's being done by the CPU.

I'm thinking about a system capable to support "legacy" A3D games --as well as modern EAX games. Instead of putting a Diamond MX300 besides your modern sound card, and getting the headache of conflicting resources between two sound cards, how about using A2D instead? From what I read, the weakness of software emulation is CPU performance hit, but with modern CPU we have today, it shouldn't matter anymore, should it?

Anyone ever tried A2D before? Does it have other drawbacks beside CPU consumption? Does it sound worse than real A3D 2.0?

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Yeah, on a Live!. I remember it being a bit quirky, honestly. I haven't used it in a long, long time though.

I've used it with an Audigy - they bundle with the kxProject drivers, actually. Seemed to work just finefor me, with no great impact; possibly because I was using a computer with a processor that didn't date back to the turn of the millennium, as you say. That said, I'm not one for sitting in a chair avidly listening for subtle changes in sound, so I'm probably not the best judge.

But all the 3D sound effects work fine, do they? If that's the case, then it seems that A2D is a nice alternative than putting in an MX300 (or a turtle beach Montego) besides your modern sound cards.

Makes me wonder though: how troublesome it is to put more than one sound cards in Windows98 or Windows XP?

well, as I've mentioned elsewhere I have the benefit of owning an MX300 also, so it's a moot point for me 😉 As for the sound effects, I'd again reiterate that I'm far from authoritative on the matter, but the A3D demos certainly worked a treat for me, and once I'd forced enable in Q3A (since it doesn't seem to detect it) there was a noticeable difference to me.

I'd give it a more thorough road test for you, but I've just reinstalled Windows and aren't in a position to do so yet. Frankly, though, given how easy it is to install and remove, you'd be better off at the end of the day just trying it and seeing how much mileage you get.

Actually my Diamond MX300 died some years ago 😢 But I can always looking one on ebay if it's worth the trouble of installing two cards on Windows.

There was?

I see. Thanks anyway. 😀 Guess I'm going to download it and test it myself, although right now I cannot compare it with a real Aureal Vortex 2. But at least I can still notice if there's some unpassable peculiarities.

Well, you could always argue I was hearing what I expected to hear, I suppose ;p Let me know what you think.

Er, I just wonder what difference it is, and how noticeable. Frankly speaking I actually hope that A2D with newer CPUs will be as good as real Aureal Vortex 2, just like I hope that munt (as MIDI device) with DOSBox is as good as a real DOS machine with real MT-32 (which is actually not 😢 , but of course, I have yet to try that one CVS).

See, building multiple legacy systems to cater every features that ever had s quite a headache, y'know! Now, if only GeForce 7 supports 8-bit palleted textures and Windows 98....... 😵
