Get PCPBENCH for DOS and run it as:
PCPBENCH /MODES
It will list supported VESA modes. Then you can test the modes with:
PCPBENCH XXX (XXX being the VESA mode number listed before)
Requests are also possible... /msg kixs
According to the datasheet I found, TKD8001 supports up to 24-bpp.
Are there TKD8001 variants limited to 16-bpp ?
Nie tylko, jak widzicie, w tym trudność, że nie zdołacie wejść na moją górę, lecz i w tym, że ja do was cały zejść nie mogę, gdyż schodząc, gubię po drodze to, co miałem donieść.

PC Player Benchmark doesn't list nor support the 24bpp VESA video modes. I would suggest using VESACHK instead for that purpose and run it like this:
VESACHK | more
In the list, BP is bits per pixel.
VIA C3 Nehemiah 1.2A @ 1.46 GHz | ASUS P2-99 | 256 MB PC133 SDRAM | GeForce3 Ti 200 64 MB | Voodoo2 12 MB | SBLive! | AWE64 | SBPro2 | GUS
I see. You can also run DRHARD and see all the VESA modes - under Devices > Graphics adapter > VESA
