I'm at my cousin's and I'm setting up dosbox for him, because he loves old games. He'd like to turn on the amber monitor pixelshader in gulikoza's dosbox, and pixelshaders require direct3d.

Now, here's the problem:

Dosbox lags terribly with direct3d on his computer for some reason, I think just the display lags, not the actual emulation, it looks a bit like, when frameskip is turned on, but it's not.

He has an NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 video card, I downloaded the latest drivers for it, but it didn't solve the problem.
Do you know what could be the problem?

The NVIDIA GeForce FX5xxx series have a horribly slow support for pixel shader 2.0. And the 5200 is the worst card of the series.

you should also change the video card to anything post-2002 that isn't a GeforceFX, that will solve your problem

to Freddo :
well, at least now it's obvious why you chose that nickname 😜

to Radinor :
let alone changing the card altogether, I don't know if that is a laptop you're talking about, have you considered some fiddling with the modded drivers for FX5200 at www.laptopvideo2go.com ?

just don't use Direct3D. I'm sure a FX5200 has lightning fast 2D, like every other card since 1998 or so. Use Surface or maybe DDraw.

Use OpenGL for that card IF 3D acceleration is to be used at all.
