Hi,
USB floppy drives - do the drives inside have standard floppy interfaces running through a floppy to ide controller board?
Can the drives be installed in standard (old) pcs if needed? (obvs wouldn't fit standard bays and reduced height)

AFAIK yes, most have a separate converter and conventional drive - if by conventional we mean a Teac FD-05 (which I think is the de facto standard for laptop floppy drives, whether internal, usb, or proprietary external) which uses a single flat cable, you just need an adapter which is exactly what the proprietary external category is 😀

The opposite conversion would be easier! (you can get loose USB to 34 pin FDCs, but at that point get a Greaseweazle and deal with conversion so that you're not limited by the absymal extensions added to the all-LBA USB Mass Storage Class to support a few all-CHS disks)

The few USB floppy drives I have use a 26 flexcable connection internally as opposed the the 34pin flatcable which is normally used inside of a pc.
There do exist adapters to go from 34pin to 26pin.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
