I’m pretty confident I can get this CPU to 266+ FSB, even if that involves a lower multiplier. It’ll POST at 266x17 with 1.425v core.

Will the RAM run faster or would it be necessary to set the memory multiplier even lower? Because in that case I wouldn't expect much effect of av higher fsb?

The RAM would be faster yes. I’ve got PC2-8500 that at the moment is only doing 833MHz and is rated for 1066!

So, you'd be able to run it at a higher ratio now than you do? That might also bump it a few marks?

If it's dual it's kind of cool ... 😎

Its the same as a Pentium Extreme Edition 965 but on S771.

Are you modding it into 775 ? (Should be possible iirc) or do you have a 771 mainboard ?

More CPU overclock! Frustrated though that the GPU doesn't want to OC at all ... OTOH - I can pretty much hear it's power supply switchers whining under load - it may not be all that healthy 🤣

Well I did buy it at the recycling station's shop for whatever they can pull up from the containers, for appx US$8, and absolutely untested, so probably can't complain.

Afterwards I've had a run at 3.5 ghz cpu, which 3DM2K1 responds very nice to. It seems that either the BIOS update or the fan I placed at the scorching MCH has helped the cpu's overclock potential.

I haven't used this card in over 12 years. No introductions needed.

I think i found my next GPU and driver for S775. Its a 4870 X2 with Catalyst 8.12. Also havnt used this card in a long time. Ill be playing with the P4 660 first and then jump to the Xeon 5080 modded for 775. The attached benchmark is with a 5% OC on the CPU with the card at stock, so there is more to come.

2600 XT? or is that the fabled 2900XT ? one of the worst GPUs ATI ever produced, not many other GPUs can lay claim to that title.

It's the 2900 XT. First card with 512 bit memory bus.

On paper it has amazing specs ..in practice however it falls rather short performance wise and ran far too hot for its performance level, I have one myself and I keep wondering if there is anything I can do to make it better ..I know however its just me trying to make myself feel better about having bought it at release. IIRC ATI never did any further R600 GPUs after the 2900 XT though they did have a 2900 XTX planned which would have been clocked at 800Mhz Core and a thumping 1100Mhz memory clock it did have a few engineering revs but they dropped it for the HD3000 Cards. I wonder what the temps were like on that XTX model I know it was a 240watt GPU which was a monster power draw for the time So I can only imagine the heat output would have been just as large.

I originally started with a 2600 Pro AGP myself ..which wasn't a great card either but it also wasn't terrible or expensive, no idea why I thought buying a 2900XT was a good decision.

-Just remembered why I bought the 2600 Pro . .it was so I could play STALKER, god I loved that game, still do.
Such memories buying a GPU just to play one game 🤣.

The HD 3850 is pretty much just a die shrink of the R600.

Its a bit more than just a die shrink, they actually rejigged the memory bus and cache handling, reading the spec PDF they did some rather cloak and dagger shit with the cache and cache buffers trying to hide latency. Its a shame they had to lose the 512/1024 bit memory ring bus due to cost cutting, I wonder if the bigger bus would have given the 3870 a nice performance bump. One could say it did get a nice bump just from the die shrink and lower power draw but looking at benchmarks the 3870 isn't that far ahead of its 2900XT sibling.

Why sticking with dual when you can go quad !

Dual 3870x2

The attachment IMG_20221107_225257.jpg is no longer available

Or Dual 4870x2 ?

(Joking, not sure to compete with these cards because 1/ the only s775 Crossfire Motherboard I have is currently used. 2/ I don't know if I have good netburst on this socket. 3/ Quad gpu generally sucks)

Oh, that’s no problem, I have two 5970s! And two GTX 295s!

If I can get hold of a cheap 680i or 790i, I could also go tri-GTX480.
