Hi! I have a Win98SE tower at my mother's house. It is way too high-end for my needs. Right now, when I turn it on, Windows complains of an Out Of Memory error. When I use Step-by-step confirmation mode and disable the QEMM drivers, I eventually get a blank screen with only the text cursor blinking then the shut down screen. 🙁 I tried disabling other drivers but get the same result. Before that, I've been unable to get either UMBs or EMS in Windows mode: if I use EMM386, I get an Out of Memory error. If I use QEMM or UMBPCI, I get an exception error immediately. 🙁 How can I fix this error? BTW, I'm not at my mother's house right now.

This right here, is why Windows ME is designed to eat the TSRs.

Don't load any real-mode memory management DOS drivers prior to Windows 9x.

Yep Windows 9x when installed on DOS usually rem's out the DOS memory managers (but not always), like it does for MSCDEX.
You need to edit the config and rem out those mem managers except himem.sys.
You should run memtest off a bootable floppy or cd to make sure the ram isn't gone bad....if not and you use clean config and auto bat then win9x has some corruption some where....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

They are currently disabled, but I really want UMBs and EMS when I get the computer to work again. BTW, they used to work on an old Win98SE system.

I have the feeling you are playing around with the same topic over and over again.

Re: WIn98SE system DOS mode: EMM386 only gives 31k UMBs!
Go for a bloody boot menu and start DOS7.1 directly without destroying the Windows 98 startup sequence
