Hi there!

Basically, am wanting to run DOS games on the go. I was pretty much settled on a GP2X for the task, until I saw the compatibility lists, and some quarters were suggesting a pocket PC is the best way to go. Now, pocket PC's, I know nothing of.

So I opted for the easy option and thought I'd ask what the best choice is.

If I was to be buying a PPC, my budget would be around £100 ($200), whereas the GP2X F-200 is £82 ($160). Would I just be better off with the GP2X? It's specs are pretty impressive, and from what I can gauge, you cannot get similar for the same price, in a PPC, it would cost alot more.

Thanks.

Maybe read through the respective threads on the handheld forums,
gp2x should have a rather recent port of dosbox, don't know about
pocket pc.
Up to now the only port that can utilize the recompiling core is the psp,
thanks to crazyc's work on the backend. Don't know if that's an option
for you.

Of course everything depends on what/what kind of games you want
to play...

Thank you for the reply.

To be honest, a PSP doesn't interest me. But I would give it some consideration if the port was the best.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is the recompiling core?

I am favouring the new GP2X due to it's touch screen. I was imagining using the screen as the alternative to a mouse, but perhaps I'm thinking too bold, considering how new this update of the handheld is. However, future implementation of this can't be too far off, can it?

Playing mouse intended games with a d-pad or the PSP's analogue stick would be a bit too foreign for me.

As for the games I wish to play, whilst I don't want to limit myself, I would want to run games like KGB, The Clue, RTS and TBS games, and point and click adventures, outside of the SCUMM engine.

Re: cores - DOSBox can emulate an 80x86 CPU in different ways. True emulation where every instruction in the game is handled by software. Pros: Works on any port of DOSBox. Cons: Slow.

Or it can try to recompile the original x86 instructions into whatever CPU that your device has, and then let the real CPU run the recompiled code. Pros: Very fast. Cons: Only available in ports where the porter has created a recompiler for the target CPU.

So far only x86 and ARM(?) recompilers have been made.

Edit: Okay - not ARM, but MIPS32.

No, there's no ARM backend yet, only x86, x86_64 and mips32 (little endian).

But for the games you mentioned it might not be relevant. Check the
handhelds' forums/wikipedias for information.

Are you really sure it's that cheap? Over here in the Netherlands the F-200 (not the F-100) goes for 170 euro (£115).

EDIT: checked http://gp2x.co.uk/ordergp2x.html, they're indeed going for £120. That may influence your decision.
