Specs: Nvidia Geforce Quadro4 380 XGL (same as Geforce 4MX) 45.23, Asrock 775i65g, Pentium Dual Core E5800, Win98

I'm encountering the invisible HUD/black screen in-game menu issue in Blood 2. It seems to be a common problem, but the most common fix does not work for me. The game is fully patched.

This is what I tried:
-"MaxFps" "60" in autoexec set to read-only
-Disable directX 6 commands
-Enable optimized Surfaces
-Enable poly gap fixing (slower)
-Enable triple buffering
-Always specify these command-line parameters

I'm able to get the intro FMVs and main menu to work fine; however, when I start the game, the HUD is not visible and pressing escape produces a black screen. The game seems to run fine otherwise.

Do these fixes only work for newer Windows versions and not 98? I was able to get Shogo working with the MaxFps 60 command, but Blood 2 still doesn't work. Has anyone gotten Blood 2 working on similar hardware?

edit: I installed Windows XP and it worked with that.

Made an account just to post this. I had exactly the same problem. Game updated to the v2.1.

SOLUTION:
• The point is that setting "maxfps" only helps to see intro videos and the main menu, however, you need to adjust FPS again once in-game if the UI is not stable.
• When in-game, bring-up the Console and write “maxfps 59” (or any other value that works for you, e.g., 45, 30, etc.). The UI elements should immediately work for the remainder of the play session. This needs to be done every time the game is launched (not a big problem).
• You still need “+maxfps” launch argument to be able to see intro movies and the Main Menu.

MISC:
• Adding launch argument “+MaxFps 60” to the shortcut and/or to the launcher menu only helps with the Intro movie and the Main Menu. Once you go into the game, the HUD and the Reticle keep flickering and the Pause Menu is not shown (only game version number is shown).
• Adding launch argument “MaxFps” “60” to the autoexec.cfg, does not work reliably, as the game tries to fall back to“MaxFps” “0” after every launch.
• In-game, pressing Tilde “~” Key for the Console, brings up the missing UI elements after a brief moment. Once the Console is dismissed, the UI elements disappear as well.
• For me, the game works 1-59 fps, when I increase higher – the HUD starts flickering and Pause Menu is black again.
• SHOGO: Mobile Armor Division works exactly the same way. v1.0 does not show anything. However, once fully updated and set “+MaxFps 60”, it shows the videos and UI reliably across all scenarios.
