Just grabbed a Toshiba Satellite Pro 435CDS. From what I've read, it's one of the better laptops for DOS sound support, as it has an ESS688 and an OPL3. It has a Pentium 120 Mhz under the hood, which should be good for DOS gaming (I just plug my laptops into an external monitor). As usual, it had a PCMCIA card that is missing the dongle plugged into it. If anyone needs a modem card without a dongle let me know (-:

One downside is that the BIOS is locked, but I think that can be fixed by shorting a few pins on the parallel port.

Do you know if there are significant differences with the 430 CDS ? Every PDF I found labelled as 430/435 specifications turned out to only contain the 430 and nothing about the 435...

I think possibly it's RAM or HDD size is bigger, 2nd number probably CPU speed grade.

BTW that Toshiba Satellite 435CDS is a nice find and I recommend carefully prying up the plastic strip that holds down the keyboard, to remove and dispose of the two batteries sitting under the keyboard - they're all leaking by this point and will break the motherboard if left in place.

XP era games for most people are probably Doom 3, Far Cry, NFS Underground, Homeworld 2 and so on, but for me the XP era stretches out to include STALKER, Fallout 3, Crysis, Bioshock, CoD 1-4, Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40k and so on. For most of these later games a 6800GT is.... insuficient, especially if you want to game at higher resolutions (1600x1200) with eye candy on. My personal favorite late-XP era cards are the GTX 280 and the Radeon 4870, but I've build XP(ish) rigs using i7 Nehalem platforms and Radeon 7970 / GTX 760 video cards. I like to enjoy retro games with full eye candy.

Before you say anything, I know all these 2006 onwards games will run perfectly happily on modern machines, but I keep these on older rigs together with 4:3 monitors, witch I think they look better on. Some of them anyway.

Such a weird little card, I dont suppose its terribly useful without the supporting motherboard but would be curious to see how it stacks up against similar cards.

Still a very nice card to have on a unique display shelf or in a museum.

Thanks for the info, that's good to know. Also, I appreciate the advice about the battery. I'll get on that ASAP.

Last 430CDS I saw here the battery had not just corroded its surroundings but had destroyed the Aluminium body and made it brittle then the electrolyte had worked its way up the connecting wires and had eaten away the motherboard in that area, was quite a mess.

Yeah I really hope that board works, its been repaired and I doubt anyone would go to such repairs for a board that didnt work. Still trying to find a good PLCC FPU for it, I found a 33Mhz Intel one and a ITT one which isnt terribly fast FPU wise. Cant seem to locate a Fasmath PLCC though.

Got another rare motherboard a GA-686KX which is a Slot 1 440FX board .. looks like a Socket8 board with a Slot 1 instead. Apparently it doesn't work but since it has one of them nasty Dallas RTC units on it hopefully all it needs is a new one, though I did notice one of the ISA slots needs some pin work done on it too but that shouldn't stop it from posting.

This is the first Slot 1 FX board I have ever seen on eBay or anywhere else, it looks like it needs 72 pin EDO sticks too and I have a couple spare here but they are a pain to source, the ram slots and VRM look to be in good shape so fingers crossed the board doesn't require extensive repairs.

I'd replace the CPU caps at least, if RTC mod fails to POST. I've seen quite a lot of those 1990s caps fail without any bulge. (yes, I'm looking at ya, Jackcon and ABIT.)

Ill keep that in mind once I get the board, going to give it a thorough going over before even powering it up, might even remove a few VRM caps and check them for tolerances, I have a post card handy too.

I wonder what Pentium IIs it supports, Im thinking the early Klamath would be the best bet, say a 233 or 266. Gigabyte lists it as supporting 233 - 300 so early Klamath is correct.

-Just realised I may not actually own a Klamath ...most of the PIIs I have are 350+
