I'm a newcomer to DOSbox and am running Stonekeep, which installed and plays fine, except that I can't hear or see any of the character speech (from what I understand the game features both digitized speech and text captioning - I get neither). When I'm supposed to be seeing text, it looks like text is starting to appear in the bottom left corner, but it's there for just a second and is gone. The video and sound (game music and sound effects) otherwise appear to work fine.

I thought my problem mght be the game speed, so I slowed it down with mo'slo to no effect.

I'm playing the game using a fairly new PC - Vista Home Premium, AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 4800+ 250 GHz, and with 2 GB RAM.

I haven't been able to find the answer elsewhere in these forums, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I think you don't need Mo'slo from withing DOSBox. Just tweak your cycles.

We need more information, specially how did you mount your drives. Did you run setup to choose sound settings? etcetera.

Thanks for your help, el -- problem solved! Here's what i found out -- hopefully, this'll help some other vogons readers/posters.

Your comment on mounting started me thinking about whether the folder I mounted as my DOSbox c drive had all the files it was supposed to have. This led to some extensive online searching -- I eventually found a report about a similar problem regarding an old quest for glory game -- namely that the game worked fine except that both speech and text captions were missing. Apparently, the problem occurs when the game is searching for a speech file, but can't find it.

That got me looking into my files to see if a speech file was in fact missing. As it turns out, a file (filename: VOICES) had been somehow corrupted or interrupted when I copied it from the CD to the folder I was mounting. I replaced the file and -- presto! -- the game now works beautifully with both speech and captions.
