Recently got a 286 Kouwell KW-241 pc. Also picked up a POST card to see any codes. Everything checks out fine, but it only boots into the BIOS sometimes. I have a feeling it’s a RAM problem, but if it was, I wouldn’t boot at all. The only cards I have in it are the EGA card and the FDD/HDD controller. I really need some help with this thing.

Bad ram can POST and BOOT fine until it gets hit in the non funtional cell.

Add a pic of your board in high res, it'll help visual inspection.
Find CheckIt 3.0 by TouchStone Software. There is a ram test if I'm correct.

If present, try loosening the ram timings in BIOS.

Here’s that photo. I did have a battery that was leaking and I took out. There was some corrosion near the keyboard connector. I dropped a few drops of IPA and vinegar just to take card of that. Might take out that chip and clean under it, replace it with a socket.

I'm unfamiliar with this kind or RAM, but reseating the chips and cleaning the sockets is a must at this point.

Check jumpers.

Been reseating the ram so many times. All the jumpers look correct to the paperwork. I haven’t cleaned the sockets yet. You think automotive contact cleaner would be okay? I don’t want to have to wait for Deoxit to come in.

No idea, sorry. Automotive could be too harsh. Some alcohol and a good scrub could be enough.

Checkit 3.0 and test the ram. IDK if it works for this type but it won't hurt.

Any idea how to get Checkit on to a floppy? 5.25 or 3.5. Could I just use a usb 3.5 floppy drive with my Windows 10 computer?

Yes. Boot with Dos and then run checkit! 😀

Now it just booted into the BIOS twice. I had the lock unplugged and that locks keyboard input. Plugged the lock back in now it won’t boot. Don’t know if it helped, but I did take the jumper out of the pins near the CPU

Ok,

- anything hot at the touch?
- if you push the chipset chips, does it make a difference?

When it boots, can you type with the keyboard?

Btw, maybe it's not ram related, but HDD controller.
What happens without the controller on? Straight to bios os it goes on to "no boot disk, insert boot..."?

The only thing I’ve noticed that gets warm is the CPU. I’ve turned it on with nothing in it, and still nothing. I’ve tried pushing on the ram. Nothing. On the cpu. Nothing. On the bios chips. Still, nothing. I’m at a total loss.

Do something else to relax.

Have you measured V on PSU? Let's check everything.
