So, I got SIM ANT on CD ROM the other day for my PC, compatable for IBM 286, Windows 3.1 & 95. It also says Macintosh, but does not work on my G4 Macbook, but that makes sense.

I tired installing it, but get the message:
"The image file C:\setup.exe is valid but is for a machine tpe other than the current machine."

SO, I know this program shouldn't run in 64 bit, even when I change the compatibility settings for the setup files. SOO, I downloaded DosBox, great program! I moved all the setup files to the HD. I mounted my OLDGAMES as my C drive, and then I CD SIM ANT. I hit setup.exe and nothing, it gives me either win_filename errors or "need windows" errors.

Okay, so you need to install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox, then. (Many people have done this successfully; you should be able to find detailed instructions elsewhere in the forums.)

That link you posted most likely refers to the DOS version of SimAnt.

(You also might be able to get the Macintosh version running on a PC with an appropriate emulator, namely Basilisk II, but running Windows 3.1 in DOSBox is probably much simpler.)

Windows 64 bit doesn't like 16bit programs that's why it doesn't work on XP64 (at least I *think* that's the reason).
And why it doesn't work on plain Dosbox is also logical when you look at what I quoted. It needs Windows not Dos, so if you install Windows 3.1x on Dosbox the game should run fine (Windows 3.1x runs great in Dosbox, btw)

Makes sense, but do I need Windows 3.1 to install it? Where do I get it? I will check the forums in the meantime.

obviously yes, since you are not able to install it in any other way and I guess the game itself runs only in Windows as well. Windows 3.1x can not legally be downloaded so please don'T ask for it. It can be found in some places, for example I found a copy at a place that sells old stuff for charity.

Alternatively, you just might be able to get it to run under Linux using Wine. You don't necessarily have to install Linux on your computer to do this; it is included with Knoppix and other "live" Linux CDs.
