I never played this, it played pretty bad on my stock Amiga 500 at the time. I was more a Knights of the Sky guy 😀

Those were the times 😀
It was a hard game, it took me some time to learn how to play it. Stalling all the time... I loved F-19 and similar because it was harder to stall.
I was a kid, fond memories 😀

I don't have many memories of playing F-19 but I played the hell out of F-15 II 😀

It was an era. If you played one of those newer F-XX simulators you had lots of fun and frustration 🤣
I'm no pundit on air simulations but planes and helicopters had their fair share of importance back then.

I dunno if it was the long boring bits, or that I couldn't get uninterrupted blocks of time to play a full mission, but I wanted to play those more than I actually did. Not so much a problem if you've got multiple entertainments on tap these days, and ways to pause.

Anyway, managed a full mission maybe a couple of times on F-15 Strike Eagle on the ZX Speccy and a couple on F-16 combat pilot on the Amiga. It was Elite and Frontier where I managed to get my dogfighting itch scratched.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

I wanted to like Elite and Frontier; the premise was amazing but the former looked like a C64 game and the latter ran like absolute ASS on my A500. The only space sim (and I use the term loosely here) from that era that I enjoyed was EPIC. Pretty great game with both space and atmosphere missions where you basically invade an alien world and destroy them 😁

I also completely missed out on the Wing Commander series due to still being on an Amiga during the 386 days. By the time I switched over to PC with a 486-33, X-Wing was already out and Wing Commander never again got relevant for me. I tried my hand at the original I & II a few times under emulation and I find them insufferable.. That said, I am really curious about III & IV, so I may give them a go yet.

With all that said, nothing will (probably) ever top Freespace 2 as the MOST AMAZING SPACE SIM EVER MADE for me.. That game, the feels.. Sooo good...

Congrats..

.. technically though an upgrade edition cannot be a sole legit copy because you need a legit copy of the prior version to upgrade from.

I do have loose floppies for DOS 6.22/Win3.1. So, technically, it's totally legit. I'll also continue to use my OEM CD version of OSR2 when I can.

Today I got two for the price of one. Sure, it ain't DOS, but I can certainly put this to full use with more than a few computers in my collection.

That OS 8 disc will also be useful for the odd 68040 mac that I come across.

Short question: anyone here knows if there are any Windows 3.11 versions out there on CD-ROM? OEM, bundled, suite, dev disc? So I can form a good eBay search for one.

(I know there are many other ways to obtain it, I have the retail diskettes and it can be downloaded, but this is just a weird intersection of stuff I like to collect)

Not sure if this helps, but... (you did not specify which language, 🤣 😇)

"Win 3.1 came on CD in the MS Subscriptions only" "Maybe Windows 3.0 Multimedia Edition" "the ABSOLUTE first version of Windows on CD is REMOVED
...etc
😁

PS: and if you really really want this thing! Perhaps use the 'Preisvorschlag' option...:
(only on the german site, .de)

Wow, eh, thanks for this super elaborate reply and all the links! English IBM PC version would be what I'm lookin for. Probably one of these MSDN discs would be nice, I'll try to hunt one down, thanks!

Oh well, perhaps I read your question a teensy bit too literally then, heh...
But seemed like you were a 'collector' of sorts, hence the vast array of options.
At least now you know they really do exist on CD.

No, no, much appreciated! Actually found myself the 1998 MSDN Platform Archive. There's another one out there if someone's interested, yellowed a bit by the Australian sun unfortunately:
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/305634972434

EDIT: what is the story with these by the way? Would these sets be sent out to licensed Microsoft developers? And in general include full working versions of the software and OSes?

haha, so it WAS you who bought that one... was wondering if I should tip you off, given the ludacris cost 😁.
Way too expensive for my taste though (and the Aussie shipping cost, ouch), but then I am not a collector.
PS: the only reason that new pic with disc number 1 (DOS+Win311) appeared is because I asked the seller if it was included.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Developer_Network

MSDN had historically offered a subscription package whereby developers had access and licenses to use nearly all Microsoft software that had ever been released to the public. Subscriptions were sold on an annual basis, and cost anywhere from US$1,000 to US$6,000 per year per subscription, as it was offered in several tiers.

Did get it a bit cheaper though. Noticed this seller also offers worn home made 5.25" copies of software for new prices, so yeah... just hope the condition won't disappoint, there is quite some stuff with (and reviews about) water damage.

They were sent out as part of an MSDN Subscription. Various tiers gave you media and a license to use the software. The software is fully functional, but the license forbids you from using it for anything other than development and testing purposes (eg, checking your emails on an MSDN-licensed version of windows would not be allowed), and only the holder of the subscription is allowed to use the software (with a few exceptions like, IIRC, user acceptance testing) so no setting up an MSDN-licensed SQL Server for use by people who don't have an MSDN subscription. Some subscriptions gave you permanent licenses, other subscriptions only allowed you to use the software for as long as your subscription was active. So the CDs themselves don't come with or imply any sort of right-to-use like Retail Microsoft software does - you're only legally allowed to use them if your current or past MSDN/Visual Studio subscription says you can.

These days Microsoft doesn't ship CDs. If you've got a high enough tier of Visual Studio Subscription you get access to a website that lets you download ISOs and generate keys for current and past products. Same licensing restrictions apply though - strictly development and testing purposes only.
