I'm rnning XP, and am haveing trouble with monkey island 1 (256 colour version). When I run it alone, there is no sound, but when I use VDMS, I get internal speaker music. This doens't happen with other programs.

What's the problem? If it has sound with VDMSound, then VDMS is doing exactly what it's supposed to! 😁
In any case, if you're looking to use AdLib sound or whatever, you need to run the sound setup program with VDMSound first.
Yes, it’s my fault.

You mean that you get music with other DOS programs + VDMSound, and it's only with MI that you get speaker sound?
Make a monkey.bat file that contains the following line:
monkey.exe r
...and "Run with VDMS" it. Does this work (Roland/MIDI music)? If no, try:
monkey.exe s
...and "Run with VDMS" it. Does this work (AdLib music)?
If other DOS games work but this one in particular doesn't then your game may be busted (e.g. bad copy-protection crack) -- try to download another copy from the web, and try again. I know for sure that the game works with VDMSound so you should be able to get it to work sooner or later (hopefully sooner rather than later 😁 ).

Its also worth considering this:
If its an official version of MI1 256 on cd then the music is stored as cd audio tracks.
hey stupid snover, the problem here is that the sound is coming out from the PC speaker if you know what that is. Not from the sound card. I have the same problem. Do any body knows how to fix it. Having the problem with all the Lucas games. No problem with video.

That will depend upon your system configuration and OS and what version of Monkey Island you have. If it's the original PC version, you need to give it the proper parameter after the executable. This should've been explained in your game's documentation.
"monkey.exe s" for SoundBlaster/AdLib
"monkey.exe r" for Roland MT-32/MIDI
Just copy the area between the quotes and paste in into notepad, give it a short, easy to remember name and save it into your Monkey Island directory. Then change the last three letters of that file from "TXT" to "BAT".
The "s" and "r" are read as parameters for the monkey.exe file.
Then you can click that .BAT file to start the game.
There all kinds of other possibilities that could be affecting it. If you have the CD version, it would need a different configuration as that version has SoundBlaster support (with CD Audio tracks for music). If your sound card doesn't have FM (AdLib) support or internal MIDI/MT32 support you will still get silence (fortunately, I believe the Live card supports both).
Also, if you are running an NT-based OS, you'll need VDMSound or similar tool. DosBox should also work (not for the CD version though). Note that DosBox presumes you understand the basics of running DOS, (how to change directories, how to edit batch files or configuration files, etc...). If you don't, you might want to learn if you're going to use it.
You can also try ScummVM.
Having the problem with all the Lucas games.
Don't generalize game setups. There are a large number of Lucas games and no single fix for all of them. While some may use a similar sound system, never presume they are identical. Use the quick search box at the top of the page, placing the game name to search (like "Indy" or "Indiana" for Indiana Jones games). Someone else may have had a similar problem and already found a solution.
If not, start up a new thread for each game title that is giving you problems and give us as complete as possible listing of your system specs (as stated in the posting guidelines at the top of each forum). These are used to help troubleshoot problems and avoid wasting time where we have to ask you "20 questions" about your PC.
If VDMSound gives you no sound (other than PC speaker) in any game then very likely you have one of those "Direct IO" drivers hanging around on your system (for stuff like video card hacks and hardware monitoring tools).
Search your HDD for *.sys files that contain the string Ke386 (make sure hidden and system files and folders are also searched). At least one file must come up, if it doesn't then the search didn't work properly (need to make sure it searches all .sys files, hidden or not).

I would also recommend the use of SCUMMVM
It improves the gfx and also can play the cd-audio tracks of the Monkey Island CD version.
You even can convert the audio tracks to MP3s. SCUMMVM can then use them as if they were CD-Audio tracks.
Works good for me...
