Great to hear it is working fine now.
Otherwise I could hae provided a spare CPU board, as I have several spares around.
The SCSI upgrade is a real improvement. The only pinhole on these machines is finding an adequate graphics solution.
There are allmost no high performance EISA graphics boards apart from some TIGA solutions only suitable for CAD.
Sticking with the Compaq graphics seems to be the best solution apart from switching to an ISA board for better compatibility.
Try to look for a 3C579 for an adequate Network solution, or go for one of the Compaq EISA Network boards.

Happy to report the PC continues to be Rock Solid after the CPU change.

Got the network card, a 3C592-C 3COM Etherlink III.
It's working flawlessly with Windows 98, but I need to get it up and running in DOS. (on the To Do list)

On the topic of the graphics card, to be honest I'm quite happy with the Compaq QVision card. It's been performing on par or better than any of the EISA/ISA boards tested by Phil's ComputerLab.

By the way, do you have a CPU board that supports a Pentium 60/66? Was thinking it would be an interesting upgrade without having to pay for the extortionate prices of a Pentium Overdrive... 😀

Cheers,

I have a P60 board for the Deskpro /M but unfortunately it does not work.
Tried it with the original backplane it came with as well as in a different machine.

Time for an update:

I love this PC, but trying to upgrade it is frustrating me to no end... 🙁

Although I am very happy with the 486 DX2/66 I have, the current setup is leaving some performance on the table because my Processor board does not have any cache.
To try and mitigate this, I have bought a processor board with cache, but unfortunately I could only find one for the 486 DX50. I have tried changing the oscilator to make it work with the 66Mhz processor, but it failed as despite booting, I got corruption on screen.

More recently, after more than a year of search, I have been able to acquire a relatively rare Pentium 60 board. I was very excited to add this to my setup, but unfortunately it seems the board/processor is/are dead 🙁
- The PC turns on, and I can hear the HDD spinning up as normal, but I have nothing on screen - no beeps either
- There is no seek activity in the floppy drive
- The Processor seems to be somewhat working, because it warms up the heatsink as time passes
- I have tried to move the memory around, have less memory modules, all memory slots filled, no memory at all - Nothing, not even a beep

I am at a loss, as visually I can't see anything wrong with the board and there does not seem to be any reason for this not to work...
Don't know if this is happening because I am missing some step in the configuration (don't have the manual, and can't find anything online about upgrading to this processor), or if it is just broken

I am leaving a few pictures of the board (just in case you guys can see something I don't), and as always, happy to hear your thoughts on this...
