Heyo,
I’m attempting to install Half Life 2 on a pretty low spec Dell Dimension L600R. It has the stock 600mhz Pentium 3 and 196mb of ram. As for the game, it’s a cracked version of build 2187. I’m aware that my computer isn’t up to the requirements of running the game, but I wanted to attempt it anyways out of curiosity.

So, my problem is this. The game uses steamemu.ini to execute the game by running a bat file. Upon running the bat, I get an error “Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults” running it again gives me the same error but “resetting to safe mode” and a third time says that the game requires a minimum of directx 7 supported hardware. I’ve tried adding a variety of command line parameters to the bat file (including -dxlevel 70), but nothing works. I’ve also tried editing the settings in regedit to no avail.

I won’t post the direct link, but if anyone wishes to follow along, the download is REMOVED. Any thoughts?

We do not support so called "abandonware" here.
I can confirm that HL2 versions 2153,2187,2217 work fine on Windows 2000.
Make sure you are using a video card and driver that can run the game.
Make sure that DX 9 is installed.
Also for troubleshooting HL2 engine games easier try launching in a window.
ex: -game hl2 -console -window -novid -steam
Closed.
