Elyts tend to dry out and loose capacity, tantals tend to explode when not used for a long time and suddenly powered up 😀
It's mostly power filtering, you can use elyts with similar or lower ESR or better polymer caps...

Do you know if the other variants of Trio64 works as well without changes on the PCB?

I mean:
(...)
- Trio64UV+ (86C767)

(...)
only 765

I've just checked the datasheet of Trio64UV+ (86C767) and it is also impossible to use that chip for VLBUS cards:

The attachment vlbus.jpg is no longer available

It is a quite rare chip so people rather would not try to use that in DIY projects (compared to very popular Trio64-V+), anyway since I found the data, I wanted to share it.

775 is checked, config strap for BUS interface is fixed to PCI.
Trio64 and 32 doesn't work with this PCB, because pcb is designed for Trio64V+ (LFB mode) and Virge. (different Pinout between LFB Mode and Trio64/legacy mode)
Virge DX (375) is also checked, (same result as 86C775 )

Thank you for your response.
I have ordered the PCBs and elements, really excited.
One question about BOM - can I use electrolytic capacitors instead of the tantalum ones? I see that on many Trio64V+ boards it has been used like that but I started to wonder if there will be any difference in e.g. image quality. I suppose that the purpose is to filter the power supply to the chip? Is there any cons of doing that?

You can use Elko, SMD (d= ~5mm ), it is no problem

I sit on pile of tantal. This is why i use tantal. (modern tantal is much reliable than older tantal from 1980/1990s )

I ordered a batch of PCBs in JLCPCB, manufacturing is finished and they are on the way, so I hope I'll get it and solder soon 😀

Wow, this sound very interesting. Crossing my fingers to see the outcome of these projects. Do you plan to share some "in the middle of work" info? Some results of test, some issues to be solved... This always is a kind of spice for project and in the end a lot of fun.

👍 are new chips available as Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426-28, or are you planning on salvaging like in S3 case?

What would be advantages of Trio 64, Cirrus Logic 543x VLB over Trio 64V+? only if one have spare chips/donors...

for ISA, my probably best card is Diamond S3 similar to this

with 1MB VRAM (with those strange SIP memory chips). with damaged one corner of the PCB where I fixed damaged traces by wires. It would be nice to have 2MB version of this 😀

PCBs arrived today 😀 I decided for ENIG finish, even it's very thin, it could be coated with SnPb solder later when all Au goes off...
The edge connector seems to be shaped in reasonable way so no need for manual grinding...

How about Y1 xtal oscillator? What f? It's not listed in BOM.

Y1 is a 14.31818MHz crystal, which is described in the CSV file. I used two specifications of crystal, 49SMD and 5032, both of which worked perfectly.

Thx, seems i have old csv bom file. I checked github again and Y1 is now in the list.
Btw I foud there are 2 atypic IO gates 74AHC1G32 and 74F260 that I don't have in my spare parts so I'll need some Mousering...

Trio64V+ is better than Trio64 and GD543x . But, both older chip has correct working VLB interface. (Trio64V+ has "minor" buggy VL-interface)
Trio64 is not bad chocie.

I've noticed that my Diamond branded Trio64 is a bit more compatible with some of the older VLB motherboards compared to the Trio64V+. It would be good to have a Trio64 on hand in case the Trio64V+ doesn't work on a particular motherboard.

Plan your life wisely, you'll be dead before you know it.

Hello, that's a configuration resistor, you don't need to install it all, you just need to be consistent with the picture and it will work very well.
Also, I'm confused by your memory chip. 😀

Ok, it would be more clear if we have a schematics to see what resistors goes to what S3 chip pins and what it does (yes, I can beep it with DMM if I really want).
I simply don't have 4 same memory chips but I don't see a problem, all are faster than 50ns, I tested them in other PCI card with sockets in VMT and no errors was detected...

Since this is a double-sided PCB, you can easily analyze the relationship between the resistance and the Trio64V+ chip pins by measuring and comparing it with the chip manual.

Yes sure, but why not to have a schematics in pdf here...
btw is somewhere described how config straps changes if someone wants to use Virge chip instead? Or is it completly the same? I personally don't plan use Virge but some one else asked...

I thought that Virge was a no-go due to bugs on the VL interface
