As an example; currently, on eBay UK, are the following:

Pentium III 866 (SL4CB, Coppermine - £15
Pentium III 866 (SL4ZJ, Coppermine) - £22
Pentium III 866 (SL4MD, Coppermine) - £29

Are they all practically the same?

SL4ZJ is a newer stepping than the other two and also needs 1.75v minimum, while the other two can run at 1.7v. the other two may be functionally the same and just differ in terms of being boxed or not.

i don't know why intel bumped the minimum voltage for these late coppermine steppings, but it's probably because they determined that the CPU microcode bug fixes needed the higher voltage for stability.

Thank you for your response.

Will all three basically run in any motherboard that supports Pentium III CPUs without issue?

they should, the steppings usually aren't mentioned in compatibility lists.

Brilliant, thank you. It is appreciated.

Newer stepping usually indicates better overclocking, but that's still a lottery. Or you can achieve better undervolting results, since none of the 866Mhz parts actually require 1.75V to work.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
