It has been 20 years since SGM-V2.01, and I even deleted the Soundfont file myself.
Last year, I downloaded SGM-V2.01 from archive.org and tried it. Oh my god, the sound was TERRIBLE, haha...
So I made this SGM-X48.

Shan SGM-X28/SGM-X48 v1.0 Soundfont:

1.Premium sounds from early-to-mid 1990s, brings back the joy of the old days.

2.The most balanced GM Soundfont, volume balance is close to Roland SC-88Pro.

3.Optimized sound quality, sound is much better than SGM-V2.01.

4.The X28 version is less than 28MB and can be used on SoundBlaster AWE32/64.

I remember the old "SGM-V2.01" getting recommended a lot but when trying to use that soundfont under FluidSynth the Reverb and Chorus effects are completely inoperable, even if I set the mixing level for them to the max.

I'm getting that same problem with this release too; but I also get these following lines:

fluidsynth: warning: Instrument 'Honky-tonk': Some invalid generators were discarded
fluidsynth: warning: Instrument 'Piano 3': Some invalid generators were discarded

I'm tempted to open a issue on FluidSynth itself about the reverb and chorus issue because I think the way they're implementing the reverb and chorus is completely wrong. It shouldn't be based on what the SoundFont wants, it should be based on the actual reverb and chorus controller.

SGM-X48 is made using Audigy RX + Vienna 2.4
Maybe you can try CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth, and it supports multiple drum sounds on other channels like Roland SC

Thanks for this new SGM soundfont, shandavid! 😀
I will try it these days on my DOS PC with WP32 McCake.
I remember some games are configured to use the old SGM-V2.01 soundfont because they sounded best with that.

Can't use Windows software synths under Linux, but I'll likely open a issue on FluidSynth if I can determine nobody else has ever tried to report these problems in the past. There's still a lot of things that need to get worked on with that project anyways.

Vienna is the official sound font editor from Creative / E-MU right? Because then that just makes the "invalid generator" message even more absurd to see...

I'm using the x48 soundfont on my audigy 2 on my win 98 system. Works and sounds great.
