Hi everyone,

This is my first post, so take it easy on me... I know this forum has been around for a long time and has the best resources the internet can offer on retro hardware/software, but I'm still having the most difficult time narrowing down the proper GPU for my Windows 98 SE(/ME/2000??) build.

I really want a Voodoo5500 for glide games, but now I'm learning I can use nGlide or other Glide wrappers on non-voodoo GPUs to emulate glide. (I still want a v5500 again in my collection since parting with my last one..)

Current hardware:
Motherboard: DFI CA64-TC
CPU: PIII-S SL5XL 1.4GHz
PSU: Thermaltake Smart 430W

To play games a lighting fast FPS and to emulate glide, what GPU would you select? I'm being lead in the G4 4200 TI, 4400, 4600, FX5900XT, 9800 PRO, 6600GT, 6800GT, and so many more. It's becoming overwhelming and I'm really hoping your expertise can help me get down to the bottom of this. I know this information is spread throughout the forum and there is likely already a post on this, but I just wanted to be sure I'm also on the right path.

Cheers everyone!

To add, I'll be using a Dell P1110, which can handle pretty high resolution for fun but will most likely be playing at 1024x768, 1280, and maybe something higher for fun like 1600x1200.

A Geforce 3 would be the period correct card for a Tualatin 1.4, a Geforce 4 Ti4200 would be already limited by the CPU.

But for nglide you need Directx 9, so minimum Radeon 9x00 or Geforce FX 5xxxx

Maybe an FX5600. It plays well with nGlide, about as fast as the Ti4200, works with the 45.23 version of driver, generally cheap and abundant. I'd avoid the Geforce 6 series. The Radeon 9000 series is also a decent pick.

the geforce 4 ti was released 1 month after the p3 1.4GHz
seems pretty period correct, but it will be bottlenecked

if you want glide wrapper I think you need a geforce fx no? so a FX 5900se or something should be ok

This is a complicated choice to make, later graphics cards are known to have poor support for early 3D titles. Usually it is a lack of support for 8bit palette textures and fog table support.

However since you are willing to use a Glide emulator, I recommend the fastest card compatible with your motherboard. The Glide wrapper can take care most of the games that have issues with a newer card.
At a certain point, most faster video cards will actually be slower because of being held back by the CPU. I have found that it isn't worth worrying about, since frame rates are almost always going to be higher than the refresh rate anyway.

Would yall say that a Radeon 9800 Pro would be a good option for late Windows 98 SE gaming + for glide?

Don't know about Glide with an R3x0 card, but remove the shim around thr GPU die. Or at least careful check the space between the die and the heatsink.

i386 16 ⇒ i486 DX4 100 ⇒ Pentium MMX 200 ⇒ Athlon Orion 700 | TB 1000 ⇒ AthlonXP 1700+ ⇒ Opteron 165 ⇒ Dual Opteron 856

I've been using Geforce FX 5900XT. Tualatin runs even NFS Underground, Doom3, Flatout2... Those are unplayable with GF4.

Radeons are not bad but don't use too new drivers, those kill performance badly.

The right answer as always is ATI Radeon X850XT PE 😀
