Also completely unrelated, but being Greek I find your avatar and signature... interesting!

in response to off topic: Yeah, it's a reference to old philosophies (My "kynikossdragonn" username is a reference to Cynicism and "DracoNihil" a reference to Nihilism) but I am neither Greek nor Latin, I'm just a otherkin American from the USA sadly.

Assuming it is AI, then yes. But in my opinion it's just a different type of people (another generation? with different background?) who communicates in a way I find a bit strange.

There definitely is a rather unfortunate problem with communication style in this generation that I don't really mesh very well with at all, and apparently ChatGPT likes to mimick this probably because it's been fed that dataset to a extreme degree.

OK this one is rather blatant. Can we do something about it?

5.25" floppy in Dell case.

Someone even drove it to write a 3dfx poem amidst the thread. His threads are spreading left and right and are really stupid.

That guy isn't an AI, just one of those people that show up from time-to-time and flood the forum with poorly asked and considered questions. He'll run out of steam soon.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

The net is a haven for and encourages in a huge way those that are afflicted with add and associated conditions. You don't have to get all mean about it and call it ai 😀. Even ai has feelings. And delusions/hallucinations.

And let's really lay some cards on the table. This whole "hobby" encourages disorder. Why people become obsessed with obsolete, useless hard and software really needs to be studied. It's a whole new breed of screwiness. On this point no one can argue against.

I don't think AI is to blame for much of this garbage. I frequent several niche forums and over the last few years they have all become overrun with legitimately mentally ill people (who deserve some degree of patience and understanding, as long as they are not disruptive and actually attempt to contribute to the forum), as well as completely negative elements such as trolls or rude people with zero social skills who refuse to change.

I hate putting people on ignore, as it sort of defeats the purpose of a message board, but it's simply become a chore to scroll through all the garbage just to find the handful of posts worth reading... so for me it's either ignore a lot of people, or just stop reading forums altogether.

Please report the posts. Thanks!

Thank you.

My concern that this may generate significant workload and potential conundrums for moderators.

It might, but that is what theyre for.

I guess my concern stems in part from not wanting to be in that position myself and thus not wishing it on others.

I suggest to try the ignore/mute list, I've found that it can improve the forum experience a lot. It's just periodically a small handful of people who don't resonate well, which makes it easy to mute and save yourself the frustration.

I see them as less "AI" and more "someone young coming in from the 'boomer shooter' influencer pipeline excited about this real retro hardware thing".

I can think of worse behavior from some 13-22 year long members, but won't get into that.

I use ChatGPT for trivial stuff nothing serious. I used it give me some code for my SwiftUI app (learning stages, not production).

Photoshop has some generative AI, and it helped me to fix an image for a carousel in a page at work, with less than 2 minutes. Perfect.

+1
lets face it. computing tends to attract people which mainstream society wouldn't call normal, similar to hobbies like trains, comic books, ham radio, etc
Which is why some posts can seem a bit strange.
Add to that younger generations who have more exposure to more Instant type systems like Discord, Twitter, etc

Even at work it makes me a little sad that teams is replacing email as the default way of electronic correspondence.

It's a tricky balance, on the one side we don't want to gate-keep the younger generations out of old computers otherwise this era will die with the generation that used them.
But on the other hand it doesn't mean good forum etiquette should be sacrificed.

Who said trains are abnormal. I resent that.

Truthfully it, if taken to it's extreme, the best way I can put it, is one of the most mind expanding hobbies out there. For a young person.

We've arrived in the particular dystopia where nobody under 30 can type and speech recognition still makes mincemeat out of anything moderately technical or outside of a limited 10,000 word vocabulary.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.
