Hi guys, I got a copy of SF2 for IBM, but to my surprise it plays veeeery bad. I don't recall it used to be that bad when I played it back at the time. Characters fly high in the sky when jumping, frame rate is very slow, only 1 punch and kick button...

So it looks like my memories have been malformed by later playing Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, which plays awesome on PC.

My question is, were there any other Street Fighter 2 releases other than this 1993 release and before SSF2T? My recollections were that I played SF2 with the original character protraits and all, and it was fun and snappy... but I might be wrong.

Cheers!

There was also a Rozner Labs-developed Super Street Fighter 2, which is more like a SNES->DOS port.

Also there was a rather circulated-and-modified-and-repacked fanmade conversion from South Korea ~1992 with a *lot* of ugly framegrabbed graphics. SF2IBM/SF2LIU

The PC version of Super Street Fighter ][ Turbo published by Gametek, was excellent, developed by Eurocom, known for their accuracy. In fact I forget which magazine but one of the major PC gaming magazines back in the day, said "If God were a game he would be this one" because of how good the port was.

The screen is a bit smaller and due to ram constraints a couple animations are truncated, not likely ones you will see too often, but other than that it plays just like the arcade. Some versions even shipped with a 6 button joystick.

I remember playing this on my old 386 DX-25, and while it was fun, it was definitely NOT snappy. The jumps were super floaty like you said, the Soundblaster FM synth music didn't map as well to the arcade as it probably could have, and the moves were a chore to try to pull off since the game was meant to work with 2-button joysticks or two people sharing a keyboard. The load times were also pretty long between matches, from what I remeber. I still played the CRAP out of that game with an old friend of mine, and we loved it so so much. About the only advantages it had over the SNES port were the bonus rounds and the fact that I didn't have a SNES or any other modern console at the time.

At college, I had had a few sessions with "the lads" on the SNES SF2... over summer vacation, I got hold of the initial PC port, ewwww, very unresponsive and all movements too sluggish, so must have been that same one as OP got. IIRC it had an extra input delay on gamepad vs keyboard too. Anyway, played it about twice and forgot about it. Some time later I think, I loaded up a Spectrum port and while looking way worse than PC, it played way better.... when you could see what was going on.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

This one as well, perhaps? Also got bundled with a 6 button gamepad in some editions - think about it, 6 button gamepad in DOS! - but was not SSF2T if I get it right: https://www.mobygames.com/game/139983/super-s … 1/cover-621730/

I've seen this version shared around on some abandonware sites. The sprites seem to be screen grabbed from either the arcades or a console port, as you can clearly see plenty of inconsistencies, such as the washed out color palette.

Not the best port, but is quite obscure, which is why I like it.

No definitely not the Super edition, which introduced new characters. It was an edition using the original character set of SF2 and their original portraits.

After that I played SSF2T quite a lot when it came out on CD with its unparalleled sound track.

I will never understand the nostalgia in a retro forum. You can still play the game today. 😉

Yes, the CD soundtrack is good, but the sound options of the patched version 1.5/1.6 without CD audio (General MIDI in particular) are also great.
