The non-music sound you're hearing, is that just sound from the internal speaker?

Out of the box, such newer sound devices don't offer Sound Blaster compatibility (or emulation) support. You could try a solution like SBEMU or VSBHDA and see if that works for you.

If you can share your SBEMU experiences with various games in that thread, that would be much appreciated! The more testers, the better. 🙂

EDIT: oh, wait. You're probably describing your experiences with running DOS games in a DOS session in Windows 98. In all likeliness, it only emulates digital sound effects, not FM synthesis.

You could try something like VDMSound to improve Sound Blaster emulation in DOS games under Windows 9x.

AC'97 isn't just one card, it's a specification and different motherboard chipsets' "AC'97 audio" handle that differently. so you'll want to look up your board and check what drivers are available. i.e. Some VIA boards have VIAFMTSR
