I don't think there were effects, only a bunch of GS specific controllers that became available that normally are unresponsive. I don't remember any details, I just know there's a registry hack to enable a lot of things.

well i'll be. i could have sworn they worked by default. but now on windows 11 they do seem to be ignored with system synth.
the midis i play that have them work fine on converted .sf2 files from that source.
that is really stupid. i'm guessing i remembered my own personal converted .sf2 file, which did use the variation instruments.

DirectMusic has it's own parameters for effects stuff - according to Microsoft dev information that shows parameters for "Reverb" and "Chorus" on/off functions, along with effects delay - and from what I gathered, things (MSS) might not have been built right into Windows to begin with or you have to have a "DirectMusic"-compatible player to get stuff working and there doesn't seem to be any of those around.

I've uploaded all versions that I found there: https://www.old-games.ru/forum/posts/1913962

I hope this is not too late to ask in this specific thread seeing it was not updated for 193 days, so giving it a try.
I was looking for something fresh for using with emulators, so actually gave these soundfonts a go with BassMIDI, and while 1.23.7 were unbalanced and hardly useable, 3.11.7 sounded pretty much ok. With punchy percussion and quirky "synthetic" instruments these felt fitting for an occasional retro experience.
A layman question though - these soundfonts being Crystal branded, are they well known? Were these included with popular soundards? Turtle Beach perhaps?
